    Greetings,

A bit of background - I live in the boonies in NW Virginia, a spotty area
for Cingular coverage. I had minor problems with quality and a 5165 phone,
so upgraded to 6340i and GAIT. Fortunately I live on the SE side of a
mountain with sufficient elevation to give me signal strength in the high
    80s while at home.

I've been observing while in field test mode (after doing a lot of research)
various network selection characteristics, and have questions.

    Nokia 6340i, v 8.05.3

With CELL BARR ACCEPTED 0101 displays GSM characteristics indicating that I
am using GSM. 2101 always displays ACCH when GSM is active, DCCH not
    available.

With CELL BAR DISCARD either can happen - GSM or CAMPING on DCCH.

With CELL BAR REVERSE it always reverts to DCCH (so far, from my home).

All options still indicate Cingular network, as far as I can tell (haven't
figured out how to get specific carrier info yet).

Are these normal behavior? I believe I read that TDMA network is searched
for first, however clearly mine, while in ACCEPTED mode, selects GSM.

Why is 2101 displaying AMPS rather than TDMA during GSM? Does this mean that
if GSM is lost, TDMA will not be accepted, even if available?

Signal strength seems to be just a bit better with TDMA, but it could be my
imagination (coverage fluctuates like mad inside my cabin).

I am experiencing echo of my own voice when voice path is connected end to
end, on calls placed on GSM network (periodically - not every call). I have
read this is normal, so I would quite naturally prefer to be set to
ACCEPTED, but default to TDMA. How can this be accomplished?

Apologies if this has been answered - I was unable to find a clear
    explanation sufficient for my curiosity.

    Thanks in advance.

Sec 21-01 to 21-09 ACCH is Analog, DCCH is TDMA and sec 01-01 to 01-13 CCCH
is GSM. When the 01 section is active w/GSM, the 21 section will not be
active and vice-a-versa. GSM can not switch to TDMA or AMPS; TDMA and AMPS
can change back and forth at will. You can not choose the carrier that the
phone chooses in any way. That cell bar screen (only involved with GSM) is
irrelevant, don't waste your time looking at it. Google 6340i in

and get all the info you want.

When you set the Cell Barr screen (01-13) to REVERSE and then power
cycle the handset, it will no longer register with an active
public GSM network (unless served by a site that is also "barred"). The
6340i then looks for a TDMA network. Once registered on a TDMA network, the
handset may periodically re-scan for GSM and fail. Frequency of re-scanning
    will
depend on whether the serving TDMA network is home, preferred, neutral etc.

"Cell barring" is a feature of all GSM network infrastructure, and can be
conditioned on both handsets and sites. It is intended for use by
engineering folks to test sites that are not yet integrated into the
network. When a cell is barred, a handset is then set to "reverse" the
barred status, in order to enable access and testing. Handsets normally need
to be flashed with test software, or used with a test sim. In the case of
the 6340i, this feature is included in the field test menus that can be
    unlocked from the keypad.

Re: Nokia 6340i network selection questions - field test results

Googling 6340i is what got me into this mess - particularly your own
responses :-) I'm glad to see your reply to my questions.

I understand the field test menu settings, and by now many of their values,
as well as the fact that GSM & TDMA have handoff issues. The question is
while travelling out of a GSM area, will I automatically revert to AMPS
rather than TDMA - based on my own values in 0101 and 2101, or will the
phone then rescan and use TDMA if available?

One of your posts indicates that your own phone will register on TDMA first,
and wonder why mine is choosing GSM, even though both are available. Is
this a preference programmed in the phone or sim? Again, based on
occasional echo issues with GSM, I would prefer local TDMA over GSM without
sacrificing the possibility of GSM altogether?

I know that carrier selection is not an option - I was curious about which
of the field test values showed carrier information (I have since found that
    information).

I don't understand the remark "cell bar screen is irrelevant" - clearly, if
this is my only way of forcing TDMA, its value is relevant to me.

    Thanks again.

Thanks much for the informative reply.

When set to REVERSE, you say the handset may rescan for GSM and fail -
unconditionally? GSM will never be selected in this mode of operation?

I'm concerned only with the type of network selected from my home, and it
seems as though in order to force TDMA this is the only method. However, I
do not want to be "locked" into TDMA, so I guess changing the value in 0113,
depending on my location, is the only way.

Re: Nokia 6340i network selection questions - field test results

It should search for a TDMA carrier in the IRDB first. You'll see on 21-01:
sig strength (-XX or XXX in decibels down from 0)
Channel # (aXXX or bXXX for 800 MHZ or A-HXXX for 1900 MHZ)
Scan?lock? then Register (maybe reselect) then Camping; Conversant during a
call; if no TDMA then will try to 'Idle' on AMPS.

Pressing the * for 2 seconds will bring up cryptic descriptions for each
page. You can find the SID's for TDMA/AMPS and for GSM the CID's and LAC's

The reason I wanted you to Google the 6340i is that there are a few messages
from me there that give more info on the 6340i field test info.
