<http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/12...ular_signs_3g/>:
Cingular, the largest mobile operator in the US, has signed Ericsson,
Lucent and Siemens to build a 3G network.
Beginning next year the telco will build networks in "a number of
major urban and suburban markets". Cingular has reached agreement
with Nokia to improve its existing GSM/GPRS/EDGE network and
"possibly support the deployment of its 3G UMTS network". Nokia,
Motorola and LG have agreed to provide handsets and other devices in
the last quarter of 2005. Financial terms were not released.
...
The new network will offer average data speeds of 400 to 700 kilobits
per second, versus 135 kilobits per second on the current EDGE
network, and "bursts to several megabits per second on capable
devices." ...

Jeez..been getting that on Verizon's 1X-EVDO now for a while?
Think that MIGHT have a factor on Ching-Chingular's waking up?
Yeah...I know...it's only available in a few states at this time, but
watch..it's only a swapout of cards in each site...NOT a complete rebuild.
Chingular and ATTWorthless are "Dollar" driven.....don't give a **** about
quality of service or the customer. The combining of "Dumb" and "Dumber"
is not surprising at all.
Verizon has(does) have "billing" problems, but the level of SERVICE I get
from their system (2 phones,1 PDA and a PC-5220 card) is VERY good.
They all work, and work well. VERY few dropped calls, calls going directly to
voicemail..
It's pretty common knowledge that VERIZON IS NOT THE CHEAPEST!!. But if you
need a phone that WORKS in California...Verizon is the way to go.
If you want a "toy" or just be fashionable...go with the cheapest you can
find, get that phone that plays MP3's and videogames and not worry that you
CAN'T call home.

Likewise ATTWS' UMTS, which has comparable deployment to EV-DO.

Cingular + ATTWS are as good if not better.

In the NYC market the situation is just the opposite. We all sound
like fish - when we can hold a call which is becoming less and less
frequent. During the rush hour Verizon is strictly an outdoor system
- maybe.
Of course no carrier has solid coverage of every square inch, but
Cingular seems to give the best coverage here at this time.
