Do I have to have the Cingular Data Connect Kit to get the modem on this
laptop to dial through the IR port to this 6340i in order to access Cingular
Wireless Internet? The IR port recognizes the phone, but only for the "send
    files to another computer" app...
    Thanks,

Your IrDA port should have a virtual serial port assigned, which should be
usable for data connections with the 6340i.

Absoutely not--I didn't. I believe all it does is stick in login info
for using Cingular as an ISP. If you're using another ISP it's easy to
    do it yourself.

While the Thinkpad is "seeing" the phone, i.e. the "send files to
another computer" icon or "another computer is nearby" is showing: From
Phone and Modem Options, Modems, Add Modem, Standard Modem over IR Link.
As John said you should be able to select the com port assigned to the
IR, com5 in my case. Once the modem is added--whenever the phone is not
seen it will say "not present" under the "attached to" column instead of
com5. I just use my land ISP login info and phone number for CSD.
Never used GPRS but I think there's a code you use instead of a phone
number plus maybe some modem init settings.

If you don't already have it, Nokia PC Suite, available free at Nokia
(somewhere?) does a good job at backing up the 6340i's phonebook,
profiles, and user settings to the pc. It also allows editing the
    phonebook via pc.
