My son is hard on phones. What is or would be the best Cingular phone they
are offering? I am not looking for a basic phone but one with more features
that are offered in the mid to upper range of quality and cost.

    Thanks,

    Barbara L

Well, you need to look for a "candy bar" style phone. In other words, NOT a
flip phone, or any other phone that has moving pieces other than the keypad.
So the "slide" or "swivel" style is out, also. Other than that, just about
any phone will be sturdy. BUT, you need to get a good leather case for it,
one which allows ALL functions of the phone to be used without removing the
phone from the case! Then you will have a phone that is practically
indestructible. You can roll around on it, drop it, step on it . . . and
chances are, it will suffer no harm. I've done all of that with my various
Nokia brand candy bar style phones. but I've always protected them with a
good leather case. I've had zero problems with my phones. Of course, how
well the phone holds up is going to depend on whether your son keeps the
phone IN the case constantly or not. Out of the case, all bets are
    ff. -Dave

I have a Nokia 3395. I can't count the number of times I have dropped it.
Once it felll onto a concrete floor and came apart. I just put the parts
together and turned it back on. I don't know if Cingular offers them any
more, but you should be able to find one on e-bay.

I really like the Motorola V551. It has been dropped and keeps on
working. The speakerphone and bluetooth are two great selling points.

Dropped my v551 3-4 times myself. It still works fine, but the second drop
yielded a popped out keyboard that thankfully popped back into place.

You can go to NOKIAUSA.COM and buy the Nokia 5100 if you want one of
the most durable phones that will work with Cingular's service.
Although it won't be cheap since it's coming directly from the
manufacture and not being subsidised by Cingular it will take a
beating. I saw this phone at a kick off show last summer and the Nokia
rep litteraly threw the phone 25 feet in the air and let it drop picked
it up and made a phone call with it. It is completly coated with a
rubberized coating and is water resistant. (NOT WATER PROOF). If you
are going to buy one at the Cingular store you might want to look at
the Nokia 3220. While it's kind of new it is pretty durable as well.

This may sound like an odd recommendation, the but the RAZR V3 might
actually be worth a shot. While it is a clamshell design and is
extremely thin, it's actually a lot sturdier than it looks, and it's
also constructed of aluminum and nickel alloys (unlike the cheap plastic
most other phones are made of today). A metal-encased phone will
probably withstand abuse better than the plastic stuff.

the razr by far since it's aircraft aluminum. you know what those fighter
planes go through. well, same stuff. my car broke down and was on the side
of a hill in San Francisco. a big hill with lots of people i didn't want to
know so i had to fix the car real fast. i got out and used my razr as a jam
under the tire so the car wouldn't roll down the hill. then i fixed it by
pull on some thing that didn't seem right and it sparked up and the engine
was OK. i pulled out the phone and made several calls and left that area.
i swear by this phone. i swear by it.

oh. don't worry about the low earpiece volume. like all i do is say
'what?' or 'speak louder' (write those two phrases down) and eventually i
hear the other person. once i kept saying it and by the time i heard the
other person i realized it was a dog barking and not a person at all. how
did that dog make the call? i think the dog was using a nokia.

You have to take the battery out and put in on edge between the flip
pieces to use it as a decent wheel chock. It's just too thin
    otherwise.
