I am looking for a Nokia 6310i or 660 phone so I can have tri-band and
insert SIMs when I travel to Europe, Australia and New Zealand. I don't see
these are available in any cingular plan. If I buy the phone from a vender
would it be supported and would it work everywhere I typically go. No
salesman ( cingular) in my area seems to know much about tri-band phones or
SIMs. I'm just looking for a little insight and advice. Thanks.

A 6310i will work if your area uses GSM1900. If you go into a
cingular area with 850 it won't work however. If you're on the west
coast or the east coast you can use pretty much any triband phone. If
you're elsewhere with cingular you may possibly not. Also, if you get
phones from the carrier such as cingular your phone will be locked so
you can only use cingular SIMs. If you get an unlocked phone you can
    use any SIM.

This is why I'm very hesitant to go back to Cingular. There's no way
of knowing if your phone will work within their network (or with
someone they partnered with to make it work as if it were their own
network), and I'm not even touching on roaming problems.

Not that I'm a super fan of Sprint, but at least if I am on their
network, I know my phone will work.

Visited a Dallas Cingular store today. Very disappointed on two counts.
But things may change after they start WNP kicks in and start offering
better rate plans and hopefully better phone selection.

First - The only phone they carried that was TDMA/analog and GSM (that
outta cover any area in the nation) was the Nokia , the Sony T62 was
no longer carried due to too many problems. And from what I'm seeing
here, the Nokia is not without its own problems.

Second - If I were to upgrade my company paid for Nokia 5160 and
Motorola flip that both allow analog roaming, I would loose a
considerable area where I currently analog roam because all they
are pushing are GSM only phones with very limited coverage.

But as I said....things might change by the time Sprint contract is
    up next January.

"There's no way of knowing if your phone will work within their

This is true with any company you go with. There is no way of knowing.
However with the exception of the current California situation
Cingular has been very good about only selling the phones in a
particular area that will work on the networks they currently have in
that area. But then again so are the other companies. It is only when
you purchase a phone from a third party that you are not sure if it
    will work.

Of course there are those instances where you get a defective phone,
but companies are very good about taking care of that.

The Nokia 6310i does operate on the EGSM 900, however I do believe you
will have problems with in the US unless it is 1900 GSM. Best way to
tell is talk to someone in the company. It is not wise to talk to your
Sprint guy about Cingular phones. He will have no clue. (then again,
he might know more about them than some of the Cingular reps I have
    heard about).
