I've called Cingular customer care and a couple of local stores and
nobody seems to know about the problem I'm having. I have a Nokia
3595 and Text Messaging 100 option on my phone. I am trying to access
the AIM menu that Cingular's web site says is already on my phone
(i.e. "AIM is pre-installed on Nokia 3300 and 3595 wireless phones.").
The IM manual I downloaded from Nokia's web site says to select the
"IM" option from the Menu key, but there is no such menu. The "IM"
menu is supposed to be number 12, but my phone stops at 11
("Services"). Is there anybody who has this menu on their phone and
has successfully activated the full-service IM feature? For what it's
worth, I've checked the firmware level of the phone and it's V7.20
    09-07-03 NPM-10. TIA

How old is your phone? the early units did not have the AIM software built
in. there is no way for you to add it if it is not already there. If you
recently got the phone, take it back and ask for one with the proper menu.
if not, you MAY be able to send it to nokia to have it added. call and
    check.

Re: Using Nokia 3595 with AOL IM (AIM) on Cingular - wallaroo

    Jim,

Thanks for the info. I purchased the phone about two weeks ago from one of
the local Parrot Cellular stores here in San Jose, CA. I called them about
the missing IM menu, a couple of other stores in the area, and two different
toll-free numbers for Cingular Customer Care. All of them were not familiar
with using AIM on this phone even though both the Cingular and AOL web sites
says that all you need is an IM account and text messaging and you're set. Of
particular note was that both of the Customer Care agents and a Technical
Support agent at Cingular were reading scripts from a manual and trying to
tell me how to add a phone number to my buddy list (??!!). They didn't seem
to understand that my problem was with the PHONE not having a menu that both
Cingular and Nokia web sites said I should have. I carefully explained to
them what I was missing but apparently if the problem is not described in
their manuals, they don't know what to do. I'll go back to the store where I
bought it from and see if they can open up another box and check the phone to
see if it has the proper IM menu.

Heh-heh...not that it's funny, but I did the Cingular Two-Step over this
same problem when I upgraded to a couple of new Nokia 3595 phones (I love
the phone, BTW). The ads all over the store, newspapers, etc. advertise AOL
IM software built-in. I went to a Cingular company-owned store, and got two
of them. Couldn't find the IM menu, like you said. Called the
store...sales rep and store mgr. both had no idea what I was talking about.
Finally, the store rep gave me a tech support number to call. There, the
service tech knew exactly what I was talking about, had me get to the
software version to confirm that my phones had the OLDER software, not
    upgraded with AOL IM software.

Rather going back to the first store, I called another Cingular-owned store,
where the mgr. knew what I was asking about, and said he had the new phones.
When I got there, he actually told me that Cingular doesn't want them
selling the new upgraded phones until the older ones are all gone.

    Steve,

Thanks for the sanity check! I'm curious: what's the firmware version of
your phones with the built-in IM menu? To check, enter *#0000#. Mine is:

    V 7.20
    09-07-03
    NPM-10
    (c) NMP.

Just enter *#0000# like a normal phone # at the normal standby/idle screen

That don't work on my 3595. I get a "Request not completed" result!
