I've bought a t610 from HK and was wondering if it's possible to
change the chinese firmware to an english (or actually, swedish)
version. is it possible or are there hardware differences between
phones sold in different regions preventing
something like this?

There are differences, but I suspect you can go from the HK version to
the others, you may not be able to back the other way. Often the
versions that support Chinese character sets have a larger Eprom to
support the extended character set.
