I've had a Sony Ericsson phone for quite some time. A few months ago
I started having problems with it, sometimes when I plugged it in it
wouldent charge. Occasionally it would blink the word 'charging'
(like it doese when you keep unplugging it then plugging it back in).
The problem got worse, and currently will not charge at all.

Has anybody had a similar experience, know the cause, or know how to
    fix it?

Seen as you've had it for 'quite soom time', have you considered that the
    battery might be knackered.

More or less same with a Z600 here.
Call a service center and bring/send it in (if you're still in warranty) -
sounds like a flaky connector or power circuit (in my case).
