Hello,
I've been busy scoping out the w800i and have been considering
importing one for use over here (I'm in Detroit) on the Cingular
network. At a glance, it seems to hit all the same GSM frequencies
that my old phone (V3 RAZR) did.
I'm concerned, however, about the ability to use such a phone over
here due to the whole branding and locking issue. Over here, I am led
to believe, some functions are dependent on service provider settings
within the phone itself; settings that are locked in by the SP before
I purchase.
Can someone recommend a few reputable sources for unlocked phones? Are
there databases available with the appropriate provider-specific
settings for making sure that the w800i would be fully compatible (and
working!) with my service provider here?
Cheers!
PS - I'm sorry about asking what could be considered "low level"
questions. :-) just not sure where else to look for advice. And so I
turn to usenet! *chuckles*

I've purchased an unlocked ("SIM free") phones from mphone (and will
be purchasing a 990 from them when it's available). I've had no
problem with Cingular in the US nor Virgin in the UK. Mphone has
always answered my questions promptly and gave excellent service. They
even remove VAT from the price when shipping to the US. See

I would recommend that as a starting forum,
the software you should use is:
http://www.davinciteam.com
1) READ the forum 2) READ the instructions carefully, they're easy when you
see the flash presentation showing you what to do!
1 credit is 10 euros, 2 credits 18 euros.
I think you need to get 2 credits to unlock, could be wrong.
