    Evening folks,

I've just purchased a used (5 months old) K800i. This is my first SE
phone and I'm extremely pleased with it EXCEPT for one small snag.

The problem is that I don't get any ring tone in my ear when the phone
rings or when receiving a message when using either my Motorola HS810
bluetooth earpiece or the portable hands free headset that came with the
phone. The phone itself rings and if I manage to hear it then I can
receive the call okay using the buttons on the headset/earpiece.

I've tried a different portable hands free headset (from the wife's
W810i) and that is the same, so I don't think it's the headset. I don't
have another BT earpiece to try but this one works fine with my Nokia 6680.

This is really important to me as I spend a lot of my time driving and
need some form of hands free.

Hmm, interesting. I've just tried the wife's W810i and it's behaving
exactly the same as my K800i ... and hers is brand new last week!

    Any suggestions?

    TIA

It's firmware related. In FW releaes prior to R1JG001, you did hear the
ringer in the headset if the phone was set in silent mode, but after the
firmware upgrade to R1JG001, it disappeared from my K800 too. Hopefully, it
will come back in a future release.

    1) Open the menu, select "settings", in the first, "General" tab, select
"update service", and select "program version".

    2) On some operator branded phones, that menu option is not available. In
that case, you can access the service menu with the famous > * < < * < key
sequence ( > is joystick right, * the * key on the keyboard, and < is
joystick left, Start from the standby screen, and ignore what is displayed
on the screen during the key sequence, and you will end up with a menu named
"Service". Select "Service info" and in there "Program info".

(The first one, I think, is described in the manual, the second isn't, but
this is a commonly known "secret" that works with almost all Ericsson and
SonyEricsson mobile phones since the very first Ericsson mobile phone ever.)

Once you found out which program version you have in your phone, the next
problem would be how to change it. Through the update service online in the
phone, you will only be able to upgrade the firmware to a newer version when
that is available. In your case, if you want the ringer feature back, you
might consider downgrading the firmware version instead. That is only
possible to do either by consulting a SonyEricsson service centre, or by
using any of the existing web services, like Wotan
    (http://www.wotanserver.com/en/), for example.

Evening folks. Thanks to those that responded to my plea.

I have solved the problem, thanks to some info gleaned from a rather
useful web forum - http://myforum.lasky.net - where I also found out
about the "secret" services menu that Dan and Leda pointed me to here.
The solution was quite simple, but rather obscure.

In the "Profiles" menu select the "handsfree" option ~ edit the setting
so that you have a handsfree device selected from the list in
"Accessories" and set "Silent Mode" to ON.

Return the phone to "Normal" mode.

    Job done!

I used the SEUS to upgrade the firmware in the phone too. Nice service :-)

I'll be back when there are other things to sort out. Meanwhile I'll
    lurk and learn :-)

Unfortunately, there is one problem with this, it's probably a firmware bug:
It does not ring at all if the radio is on, it only silences the radio, but
no ringer, neither in the earphone nor in the normal ringer.

Dan, you are right about this most likely being a firmware bug. I can
live with it muting the radio/music player as at least I get some
notification of a call coming in, although that doesn't happen for messages.

If I'm perfectly honest (which I do try to be) this could be a
stunningly brilliant phone if SE would just address these issues. As it
stands it is marginally preferable to my Nokia 6680 - in purely
functional terms (i.e. what I use it for and how I want to use it).

By the way, on the day I posted my original post to this thread I also
sent an email to SE tech support about this issue. I've still not had a
    response .. very sad :-(

Yesterday I purchased a SE PV-705 bluetooth headset and this does ring
in the earpiece ... but not the ring tone set in the phone. Hey-Ho :-)

Next on the list is a proper hands-free for the car!
