I currently have an SE k800i on Vodafone and my contract is up next month.
Is there a better SE phone for e-mail and internet browsing? I like the look
of the new w890i. I know it's marketed as a music/walkman phone, but is it
any better than the k800i for e-mail & internet?

I want to change my phone anyway, as I don't like the k800i's joystick or
un-configurable menu system. Do all SE phones have the same
(un-configurable) menu system as the k800i?

If you go to the http://www.sonyericsson.com you can try some of the
    phones on an emulator.
The non-symbian phones have a similar menu to k800i, the symbian phones
(eg w960i) have a different menu system.

The w890i has HDSPA which, if your network supports it in your area,
will mean faster email and internet.

You may well miss the k800i's superior camera, autofocus in particular.

Faster to receive emails. Depending on how large your outbound emails
are you may not see much of an improvement for outgoing emails.

Thanks. What's symbian? I'm not too bothered about reduced camera
    capabilities.

Symbian is the SE equivalent of Windows mobile (i.e. "smartphone"
technology). SE actually implement something called UIQ which is a re-jig of
Symbian, look up ones such as the W960 and the P1i.
Other Symbian non-UIQ phones are Nokia ones like the N95. You could also
wait till later in the year when the Xperia X1 comes out which will be
    Windows Mobile based.

Thanks. Been to SE's site and did the comparison wth the k800i. Apart from
the lesser camera capabilities (including lack of autofocus) it seems about
the same - and no joystick (hurrah). It also says that it doesn't have a Web
browser (which seems strange), but presumably I could d/l Opera Mini -
    unless it supports Opera Mobile?

It supports Opera Mini (not Mobile) and it has the Access Netfront web
browser built in (same as your k800i)

Thanks, IanM. I suspected it didn't support Opera Mobile.

No, it's going to be exactly the same.

What you need is a bigger screen.

Just looked at this on SE's site. Looks like a strong rival to the iPhone.
Tempting to wait till it appears.

As a phone and multimedia players maybe.

But the iPhone is beyond that. Check out the March 6th event video on
www.apple.com . Is anyone else planning similar abilities for as
    involved 3rd party application support?
