What the hell are the .jad files for? I know they're Java Application
Descriptors or something like that, but if I download a game I get the .jad
and .jar file on my desktop. I right click the .jar file and choose "Send
to Bluetooth" and send it to my phone, and the game installs fine and I can
play it. Hence there seems to be no need for the .jad file?

Ok, but I still can't see what difference it makes. Surely as long as the
..jar file gets put on the phone, it's the phone that knows what to do with
    it?

A .jad file is just a descriptor. However it contains the URL where the
real .jar file lives. A site can provide you with the .jad only, when
you try to install the game your phone will automagically download the
corresponding .jar from the appropriate place.
