OK I have three problems with my new T610 - are these normal?
(1) The battery charger has been recalled (in case it explodes) so I
have got a new one from their customer service.
(2) The phone says "No Network" most of the time which is not very
helpful, so I am getting a replacement handset. It eats batterys
compared to the ad claims, but I am guessing that that is because it
keeps searching for a network (like how phones eat batteries if you
are in the Underground).
(3) My phone, my bosses and my colleagues all are very hard to connect
to from a PC using an (expensive!) cable with a USB port (from
mobileaction.com) called "Handset Manager (for Sony Ericson T610
series)". On my handset it takes a few minutes to connect to it, and
on my bosses the software just keeps on searching. Surely the point of
a cable with wires in it is to make a reliable connection (rather than
infrared). And it saves pictures as picture(1).jpg.bmp which misses
the point a bit (why expand it out to a bmp?).
Is this what all T610s are like, a batch of them or just my handset?
On the plus side, I like the screen :-)

Well, this is obviously not "normal" hence the recall.

Definitely not normal. Either the phone is faulty or you live in an area
with a very poor signal. If it genuinely says "No network" _MOST_ of the
time, then this would explain the poor battery life too, as you surmised.

Don't have any experience with this setup. I would guess it is more likely
an issue with the software than the phone.

The making of the chargers is subcontracted to other manufacturer's and made
to SE's given specs and unfortunately the MF'r effed it up. Hardly SE's
fault but they recalled the chargers and reverted to their old manufacturer
which didn't have such a problem. Not good for SE's customer relations as
indicated by your experience and many other people's.

Dunno about this. Maybe a phone fault or network coverage problem.

Why not use a USB bluetooth adapter? Much cheaper, usually very reliable, no
line of sight problems like IR. Take your cable back and get a refund ;-)
I'm guessing the s/w or cable is poor. There are cheaper places than CPW
online for bluetooth adapter.

On a side note; how does one know if the charger one got with the phone is a
faulty one, and is this only applicable to certain countries?

The only chargers recalled were the ones for the UK. No other
countries were affected.

Re: Is T610 supposed to be this bad?
Many T610 has reported (2) . Send it back for service. SE know what to do
with it.

Re: Is T610 supposed to be this bad?
Your answer to (1) is very funny. Do SE do QC test before handling over from
those 3rd party manufacutre ?
Is like saying "Is not my fault, I asked someone to make it for me except I
authorized him to put my name on it !"

Re: Is T610 supposed to be this bad?
NO. UK type of 3 pin plug with certain range of # is affected.
Not necessary only UK use this type of plug. My country also use the same
format (in Asia). Excep local SE do not practics recall AT ALL !

Re: Is T610 supposed to be this bad?
NO True.
1. This charger is UK pin format, use also in other country. Mine is one of
them but local SE do not practics recall. They say if you do not have
problem, there is no need to return it.
2. This charger is also use in other SE model, not just T610.

Theoretiaclly, the 3rd party (Delta of Thailand in this case) should have
tested their product before shipping it. It is not economically viable to
test every single product beforehand, that's why we have warranties.
The problem is one of simple physics, but what the hey.........

Re: Is T610 supposed to be this bad?
In this case, the item should not have a SonyEricsson name on it.

Why?
Beacuse it may not have been tested fully by SE? Products are manufactured
in batches, it is *assumed* that if a small number of products are fine,
then the whole batch is fine.
Warranties/faulty exchanges cover everything else.
