Slightly OT simfree question

I was just wondering why simfree phones cost more? I ask because during my
lunch break I popped into a mobile phone shop and they had a sign up
saying they unlock all phones for £15. So just curious is having a unblocked
phone the same as having a simfree phone.

Sorry if its a bit of a simple question but I relatively new to the world of
mobiles :-)

SimFree...... you buy phone and can put in any network card you want...
Orange, Voda etc etc.
Unlocked you get the phone from Orange or whoever at low cost then unlock
it alowing any SIM card from Any network to be fitted.
Network let you have "free" handset as they tie you to 12 month contract, so
they make the money back there, who said cost of mobile calls is too
expensive?!!!!

Also one to watch, when you Lose a phone and claim on the House insurance
the cost is "Simm Free" ie £150-£300 ir the cost of the hanset in purely
money terms not what you get off for tieing yourself to a network for a
year.

Because they aren't subsidised by the networks.

Bit expensive, but about right.

No, well...... not usually. Most PAYG and many contract handsets supplied
by a network are locked to that particular network, and in many cases have
either customised firmware, cases or both. For a look at the worst in
network branding, go and have a look at the Vodafone Live! T610 - now that
is a truly horrendous job.
