It's the one "feature" that I hate. When I want to adjust the ring
volume, I'll do it through the menu. I'm tired of having it turned off
    by accident.

Is there a way to disconnect the control?

Nope. I don't think so. This thread was around some time ago. The
consensus then was that you could only give it a password. That's what
I did and it seems to work OK. When I hit it by accident (and I have a
horizontal case), it puts up the "Enter Unlock Code". A bit annoying
but it prevents the ringer getting shut off.

If you do find a way to disable these buttons, please let us know.

I remember seeing a SEEM edit to change or deactivate certain buttons
but I'm not sure if that one is incuded. Look at the SEEMs guide at
    www.xlr8.us/hofo.

How does one go about flashing the firmware - nothing really about it
on Howard except to only use R47 but that is over a year old. And in
what way does the firmware update change the behavior?

    Get it done under warranty.

Ignores the kind of keypresses you might make when it's not in use.

You can't disable it, but you can block the function.

    Menu>Settings>Security>Lock Application>1234>scroll down two pages (22
lines) to "-Audio", a few lines below "AIM" (which makes it look like
"-Audio" is a subset of "AIM"), Change, Locked, END.

After you do this, when you pull your phone out of your pocket, it will say
"Enter unlock code", because you have inadvertently tried to change the
audio style. "cancel" and carry on with use of the phone.

Wow, that sure seemed like a good idea. And it does block the Audio
function on the menu. It just doesn't disable the same function on the
    button. Moronic programming.

    I looked through lxr8's map (http://www.xlr8.us/hofo/) but didn't see
anything about disabling a button or reassigning a function to it.
There is lots of interesting stuff there but nothing that I really
need to do. Do you happen to know which setting I should be looking
    into?

It does block the button as long as the flip is closed, and with the flip
open, it's a volume control, a different function altogether.

SEEM 0032_0001; Offset 0C; bit 1; change to 0 to turn Smart Button off.

It's built into the firmware. I don't know of any setting.

Re: V551 - Disable side ring volume control?

I hated that "feature" so much that I took the phone apart
and filed down that side rocker switch so that it's now
    flush with the phone's body.

The switch still works, of course, and to use it for its
other legitimate functions, I have to press it a little harder.
    A small price to pay.

If you file down the button without taking the phone apart,
you'll likely scratch the phone's body terribly. To take the
phone apart, you'll need a torx screwdriver (size T6, I think).

Now you do: SEEM 0032_0001: Offset 0C; bit 1 (1=on, 0=off) Turns Smart

I'm referring to the other buttons, not the Smart Button.
