I was looking at prices for 'nation wide' calling plans with PTT with
Nextel and Verizon based on these needs:
800 min/month usage @ 95% daytime usage with >60% LD
400 min/month PTT (99% in the same region/market)
It looks like Nextel's best deal would be the '10,000' plan or
whatever they are calling it these days:
1,000 daytime min
Unlimited night/weekend
Unlimited PTT in local area
LD included
$55/month + taxes and fees
Verizon's plan would be the America's Choice /w PTT 700:
800 daytime min
Unlimited night/weekend
Unlimited PTT nationwide
LD included
$80/month + taxes and fees
If the coverage/quality on Nextel meets my needs and I don't need
nation wide PTT (or even if I do) what do I get for the extra
$25/month on Verizon? I always thought that Nextel was the highest
priced carrier but unless I am missing something Verizon is a good
deal more.

Re: Nextel/Verizon plan costs: Am I missing something?
You get what you pay for. Nextel's cell service is horrible. Missed &
dropped calls. Nextel phone would say no service while VZW phone would work
great. No service in my home. (Nextel) I had the Nextel 10,000 minute plan,
but what could is it if there was no service? If all you want is PTT, fine.
I dropped Nextel & came back to VZW. by the way, it cost me $200 to get out
of my Nextel contract. I have the America's choice 800 plan. Take my word,
go with VZW.

your argument only holds water if you are in an area that has poor Nextel
coverage. You are probably saying "but I live in an area that SHOULD have
good Nextel coverage." Again, should being the keyword.
You have good VZW coverage, then for you and your friends, VZW is the way to
go. Where I live we have great Nextel coverage so the Nextel plan is a much
better deal for me.
How much you had to pay Nextel to get out of your contract is irrelevant and
kinda your fault anyway, didn't you know in the first month that Nextel had
poor coverage where you are ?
If I were you I would reconsider my generalizations. Saying that "Nextel's
cell service is horrible" can get you in a lot of trouble, you are implying
"everywhere". Saying that Nextel's cell service is horrible where you live
might be a better statement.

Re: Nextel/Verizon plan costs: Am I missing something?
Hmmm. In the latest issue of Consumer Reports, Nextel was rated as having
better than average call completion.
That seems to contradict your info. Plus I'm sure their study was scientific
and controlled/

Re: Nextel/Verizon plan costs: Am I missing something?
I take it as a troll to some people.....
You shouldn't be judging a book by its cover. While Nextel was average
back in 2002, it appears that the Cell Service seems to improve in
2003...IMO they're striving to do better.
Again, don't troll certain cell companies as you might anger some people
and never judge cell companies by its cover.

Re: Nextel/Verizon plan costs: Am I missing something?
A post I saw put it best IMHO;
Nextel is a walkie-talkie with a phone glued on.
Verizon is a phone with a walkie-talkie glued on.
I use Nextel for work, and Verizon for personal use. Where it works, Nextel PTT
is fabulous. Can't beat it. Phone coverage is spotty, but acceptable.
Verizon OTOH has almost 100% phone coverage in my area (NY Metro), and
excellent voice quality on phone. I've only used their PTT once, and wasn't
impressed after using Nextel.
If you need the PTT more, and Nextel coverage is good for you, go with it.
If you really need a phone that works almost all the time, go with VZW. Think of
the PTT as a bonus, not a prime reason to go VZW.
My 2c.
Dean

Funny- the only time I've had a dropped call was in the mountains of
Colorado, far away from where I should have expected service anyway (my
buddy's VZW was dead long before we got there). Never missed a call either.
And it cost you $200 to get out of your contract because that was in the
contract- should have discovered all of the problems in the first 14 days-
then it wouldn't have cost you a cent.

I switched from AT&T to Nextel and the only issue we've had so far is
that Nextel's phones are just about worthless outside of the US. When
we were on vacation in the Virgin Islands, the roaming fee was
horrendous but we could still send and receive calls on our AT&T but
our Nextel phone was only good to play games on.
I sure hope Nextel has plans to expand their coverage outside of the
US. At least to US territories. It didn't work in San Juan either.
Oh well.

Unlimited PTT nationwide looks like the main difference.
It depends on your main use really. If the PTT part is your main concern,
then I suppose Nextel would be the way to go. But I hear that their cell
phone service itself isn't so good, while Verizon's is great but I hear that
their PTT isn't so good.

Uhhh.... Nextel has at least one or two phones that do GSM *and* IDEN. My
father has one (i95, I think) and he's used it in China....

Re: Nextel/Verizon plan costs: Am I missing something?
Nextel service was terrible in the Philly, NJ & Delaware area. Absolutely
the worst.

Hey, I'm not complaining about the $200 fee. I paid it and moved on. I was
complaining about the lousy cell service.

Re: Nextel/Verizon plan costs: Am I missing something?
strange, I was in Philly about 2 or 3 weeks ago, radio to radio in Philly
was good, radio to radio from Philly to South Florida was also good. Phone
service quality followed the PTT service. I was everywhere from Elkins Park
to the airport.
