They don't like it because GSM phones don't work on the network- Nextel uses
    iDen.

You can buy an iDEN/GSM dual-band phone. You can find them at the Nextel =
    or Motorola web site.

    www.nextel.com
    http://idenphones.motorola.com
    www.boostmobile.com

True, but the GSM is strictly for international use.

But one of the quad bands is not going to be an iDen protocol.

The Motorola P280, one I know of, is an International Band that is used for
Nextel International. I believe our question is "is this Nextel P280 locked
to Nextel"? T280 is unlocked European phone, P280 sold by Voicestream (now
T-Mob) is locked out of the box and many people unlock these P280
Voicestream phones for Cingular and ATTWS GSM here in the States.

Anyone know if the Nextel P280 is locked?
Or if Nextel objects to placing their SIM in my V60gi which is unlocked and
    has international bands?

yes the p280 that is used internationally for nextel's gsm is subsidized for nextel, but can be unlocked or you could put it into your unlocked phone. of course nextel objects to it but it is legal to do...t-mo actually will give the subisidy code to people that wish to cancel their service with them and sign up with a different carrier (they call it a customer satisfaction issue )
