NEXTEL PLANS TRACK AREA UPGRADES
Nextel expects to spend $25 million to upgrade cell phone service
around NASCAR tracks to make sure the number of calls won't overwhelm the
service during Nextel Cup events next year, USA Today reports. Nextel
marketer Michael Robichaud said the expenditure for antennas and switching
gear is meant to ensure that the company won't be hit with bad publicity
from its phone users running into problems at the tracks. Nextel is paying
about $750 million over the next 10 years to take over sponsorship of
NASCAR's top series from longtime title sponsor Winston.
