Hi,
I have just bought the MA620 IR cable for my Nokia 6100 and was really
looking forward to downloading stuff to my phone for free. Problem is it's
driving me nuts!!! I have tried using the software that came with the cable,
Nokia PC suite and MobiMB but it just seems to establish a connection every
once in a while and I'm beginning to wish I hadn't bothered. Is this a
common problem with this cable? Can anybody recommend a piece of software
that may be more reliable? Or should I just give up and fork out more cash
for a non infra red cable? Aarrgghhhhhhh!
Hope someone can help.
Kindest Regards,
Vicky.

First things first:-
Did you install the drivers before plugging the MA-620 in?
How close to the dongle are you placing the phone?

Re: MA620IR
Richard,
Thanks for the reply,
Yes I installed the drivers on the disc first. I then re-started the
computer and then installed the handset manager software. For a while it
seemed to be working fine, but trying to use it yesterday it was driving me
mad.It just kept on saying that the MA-620 was not found. I even installed
it on the kids PC (which has a similar spec to mine and is up to the task)
but no joy. I checked to see if the website has an updated driver and it
doesn't. I downloaded it in any case, uninstalled, re-installed the new
driver just to see if that made any difference but it didn't. I installed
the correct version of the handset manager for my phone which is the 6100 so
I'm happy I got that right at least.
I've tried using three other pieces of software being Nokia PC suite 5.1,
MobiMB and Logomanager, none of them work. They all say no connection.
The only thing which I've discovered was from the Logomanager help file
whcih said this and I quote
"Earlier phones (specifically the phones in the 6100 range) include IR ports
which are not compliant with the IrDA standards, and although the phone is
identified in the Control Panel, connecting using this method is not
possible. To solve this problem for most users, LogoManager includes
DirectIR support, whereby the IrDA communications drivers are bypassed and
communication takes place directly with the phone. To enable DirectIR, you
must remove or disable the Windows IrDA drivers so that the physical IR port
can be accessed as a COM port."
I am using WinXP Pro with sp1a and all my drivers are up to date etc.
Any help you can give is greatly appreciated as I am about to give up on
this and buy a non IR cable.
Many Thanks,
Vicky.

Re: MA620IR
Sorry, I've had the phone right next to the dongle and everywhere between
1-6 inches away, nothing makes any difference.

Re: MA620IR
In fact, I think this looks a good buy. It appears to be compatible with my
phone and shouldn't have any of the frustrating IR issues I've experienced.
It charges the phone also...and it's cheaper than the dku-5

Any thoughts?

Re: MA620IR
Anyone thinking of buying the MA-620 infa red adaptor with the Noia 6100 and
using WinXP THINK AGAIN. I have done more research on the web today and
there are countless people who have had problems the same as me. I have
bought many things for my computer over the years. This is the worst :-(

That would indicate either a change in the computers configuration, corrupt
drivers or an actual hardware fault.

Assuming that the MA-620 has never been installed on the second computer,
I'd be leaning towards an actual hardware fault with the dongle.

That comment is referring to the old 6110 & 6150, and not your 6100.

As you've already tried the dongle on another machine, I'd guess that the
dongle itself is at fault. Generally the MA-620 is 100% reliable, and the
drivers seem stable under XP. Some of the critical updates issued by M$
have been known to cause strange problems, but I'm using an MA-620 here with
a fully patched machine with no hassles. The only thing I can suggest is
try to get it swapped out if under warranty, or replace it if it's not. I
personally wouldn't go the cable route (especially third party) - it's less
flexible, and if you go for a non-Nokia cable, a damned sight less reliable
as well. I note from another of your posts that you're considering the
cable from Scan. This is another Mobile Action product, and incompatible
with PC-Suite. As always though, the choice is yours.
