What software can one use for this? I have (and I'm not applying for the post
here...) some knowledge of music, and have made a few mono ringtones with both
logomamager and Nokia composer.
Now I have a poly phone and would like to have a go.

Re: Polyphonic Ringtone Developer Required
i think he mean developing actual ring tone from scratch and not just mere
conversion etc, it actually hardware/software combination with a midi
hardware keyboard interface with the computer. then you record natural voice
from a dog for instant then synthesise it each voice combine to make a
musical composition (i think poly rintones these days have 32 channel). if
anyone recall the good ol amiga500 intros, dont laugh but i still use amiga
for this hahaha...

Not much point recording real life sounds if you are creating polyphonic
ringtones for Mobile Phones - you are stuck with the sounds generated by the
phone. Of course, you could play back your dog samples on a P800 if you
wanted...

I think Lina has heard of a synthesiser but would probably use Cubase to

"Anvil Studio" has a free version for making MIDI files (limited functions,
but a good way to start). I use it to edit MIDIs for length, number of
instruments, etc, to optimize them for ringers.
MIDI is the "real" format to make them in, then you can probably find
conversion software for whatever format is unique to your phone.
Sony/Ericsson uses plain old MIDI.

MIDI is perfectly ok for uploading.

That's called a sampler

err.... nope. MIDI is just information telling the MIDI device what
instruments/notes to play. How they sound depends on the instrument. In the
case of a sampler, it could be recordings of whatever you wanted triggered
by MIDI. In the case of all current mobile phones (as far as I know), the
sounds triggered are produced by the phone and cannot be changed. So no dog
barks etc.

Agree, but

But you just said it is the MIDI that tell what intrument to play
(if you mean on the machine thats it play on, like mobile phone?)

Yes agree, they are not really midi thought, hence midi to ringtone
converter
Anyway i think you mean midi are just "music sheets" with no instruments, as
in ring tones keypress rely on the phone to produce the note
well i disgree, midi involve more then that to produce, involving sampling
of sounds of real instruments for each of the MIDI voices. Synthesizers
start with REAL SOUND samples and manipulate them to achive the specific
note called for, etc.
and thats what i meant, every of those

This is OT and cross-posted, so consider this my last post on the subject.
If you are interested in learning more about MIDI, there are plenty of sites
online. Read in below:
> >err.... nope. MIDI is just information telling the MIDI device what

> Agree, but
> >How they sound depends on the instrument

The MIDI file contains info saying which notes and whether to play them on
Guitar, Piano, drum etc. How that piano, guitar or drum actually sounds
depends on the MIDI device (In this case the mobile phone). If the device
doe not support General MIDI standard, then the MIDI file might tell the
device to play a guitar sound but the device might even actually play the
notes with a didgeridoo sound for example.

Well, I jumped into this discussion on alt.cellular.ericsson without
realising I was accidentally crossposting. In the case of the SE P800, T300,
T310, T610 and a number of other phones, you can actually load ".MID" files
directly into the phone. In other cases, the principle is the same but the
format of the file differs. The sounds are still being produced by the phone
and cannot be changed.
> Anyway i think you mean midi are just "music sheets" with no instruments,
as
> in ring tones keypress rely on the phone to produce the note
Yup, that's pretty much what I mean
> well i disgree, midi involve more then that to produce, involving sampling
> of sounds of real instruments for each of the MIDI voices. Synthesizers
> start with REAL SOUND samples and manipulate them to achive the specific
> note called for, etc.
Well, if I was being picky, a "synthesizer" synthesizes the sound (ie
produces it artificially) whereas what you are referring to is called a
sampler. Nowadays the border between these two is blurry indeed. You can
indeed use a midi file to control synthesizers, samplers etc to create music
based on real sounds, synthesized sounds, whatever. However, the music
produced is no longer "MIDI". Once it has been performed, the output is
actual "audio" which can be recorded to tape, to a ".wav" file or whatever.
If you took the MIDI file that you had used to make this music and loaded it
into a phone (or converted it to another polyphonic format and loaded it
into a phone) then it would sound very different.
My point was that to use music based on your own recorded sounds as a
polyphonic ringtone in your phone, the ONLY way to do it at the moment would
be to use a phone which is capable of playing back wav or mp3 files or
similar. Of course one day someone may produce a phone with a built-in MIDI
controlled sampler but I guess that is while away yet.
<waffle mode off> and sorry folks for taking up all this space in several
groups. If you want to carry on this conversation in private, feel free. For
those of you interested in MIDI, check out alt.music.midi the FAQ can be

Thank you, Sharon.
Though we DO develop ringtone software, this is (unfortunately) not
the case when we can help. But it's a good idea to visit one of our
