i apologise in advance if this is a really dumb question but i
couldn't find an answer in the manual or online anywhere...

    my network is orange (uk).

i got a 6600 yesterday and when i receive an sms it display's the
sender's number instead of the name associated with the number in my
    address book.

the guy in the shop today said that the problem is that i had copied
all my contacts to the sim directory and the phone didn't know where
to look for the name details.
so i deleted all the sim directory entries, restarted the phone and it
    hasn't made any difference.

can anyone help me with the solution?

    many thanks for any help...

The phone identifies the name based on the last 8 digits of the phone
    number.
If you have more than one copy of that number for different names or if you
have the same name on phone and sim then the phone will just display the
number. Unlikely it's the latter as you have wiped the sim so check you
don't have that number under a duplicate or alternate name.

should format user data, phone book etc, then start afresh.

    thanks both of you.
i don't seem to have duplicates and unfortunately don't have backup of
numbers, so i'll format it once i get the chip backed up.

If you edit your mobile numbers in your contacts it will show the name of
the person who is texting you.
Replace the zero with +44 if you`re in the UK, if you`re elsewhere in the
world then use your own country code.

    eg. 07797 XXXXXX
    +447797 XXXXXX

    That's how I solved it!

Seems a bit stupid that all my previous Nokias had no problem
differenciating either format the number was in.
Could possibly be solved in a firmware update....

don't know why i didn't consider this - laziness brought on by
