Dear friends, please recomemnd a good middle-of-the road GSM phone for
international use (800/1800). US frequencies are not required (but I
have no objection to them either). I am looking for good basics---call
quality, battery life, light weight---and do not need camera, games,
internet, or other jazzy features.

Nokia 6310i is 900/1800/1900 if you can still get one.

For international use you'll want 900/1800 for Europe/Asia. For North
America you'll want at least 1900 and preferably 850 and 1900.
Depending on who you go with if you are planning on having a carrier
in the US 900/1800/1900 will do well with carriers such as T-Mobile.
cingular and AT&T use both 1900 and 850. AT&T uses 1900 throughout
their system. cingular uses 850 in more places than they have 1900.
