Anyway of locking the text message inbox in case of someone nosing about
your phone?

Not as far as I know,
But if you set up a Security Code, then turn on 'Auto-KeyGuard' and
'Security KeyGuard'
Both under Menu->Settings->Phone Settings
Then No-one will be able to use the phone at all without the security code.
I know that is not what you asked for, and it is no good if you want someone
to be able to use your phone but not read your texts, but AFAIK, its the
best you can do...
