My daughter away at Uni has found that her 7610 will not make calls. It will
receive OK, and SMS, but attempts at dialling just get 'Disconnected'. It's
on an Orange UK contract.
There is also a number '2' displayed on the screen, near where the VM icon
is.
Any ideas? Calling Orange simply causes her payphone coins to run out!

Ah, the old Nokia 2nd line! Just get her to hold the # button down for
a few seconds and it will disappear. She will then be able to make
calls again.

I'm intrigued how Line 2 came to be enabled on a phone being used on a
contract that doesn't have Line 2. Has someone been fiddling..?!

Yes, but the point I was making is that unless the phone has been enabled
for Line 2 by a SIM update from Orange, it won't be *possible* to select
Line 2, the menu option doesn't exist.
The only way to enable Line 2 selection without having a Line 2 enabled
SIM in the phone is to deliberately enable either ALS or CSP using a
program such as Logomanager. It looks as though ALS (Alternate Line
Selection) has been enabled on this phone as this will allow Line 2
selection even when Line 2 isn't present.
A better option is to use CSP which only presents the option if the
inserted SIM is Line 2 enabled.

PS I forgot to mention - an Orange supplied phone comes as standard with
CSP enabled, those supplied by other networks (in the UK at least) don't.
Hence my assumption that someone has been fiddling..!

Every Nokia I have used will display line 2 if the # key is held down
for a few seconds. Here in Australia I have never seen a second line on
a phone, but it does switch over and there is no active line and that is
why people can't dial out.

Hmm, interesting. Do all networks in Australia support Line 2..? Here in
the UK only Orange supports Line 2, and their phones come with CSP enabled
(not ALS) which means that if you put a Line 2 enabled SIM in them it will
work, if the SIM does not have L2 then pressing the # key does nothing and
the menu option for Line 2 isn't even present.
All phones I have seen supplied by other networks (who do not use L2)
don't have this option enabled and putting an Orange L2 SIM in them means
that Line 2 isn't usable at all unless either CSP or ALS is enabled by
software such as Logomanager.
The difference between CSP and ALS is that the former gives control of the
phone's menu to the SIM, which means the phone only displays menu options
that the SIM supports. ALS opens up all menu options that the *phone*
supports, whether or not the SIM does. This is the only way that L2 can be
selected with a SIM that doesn't support it, and here it usually means
someone has enabled it by fiddling with Logomanager or similar.

From what you describe ALS is active on phones here in Australia, but I
have never seen a phone that has line 2 working even though it can be
selected.
I have asked for a second line in SIM but they say it *can't* be done.
Just like back in the early days of GSM I asked for SMS and they tried
to tell me nobody would ever use it!

Line 2 has to be supported by your network. As I said, only Orange do this
in the UK, your network there obviously doesn't. Your only option if you
want it is to find a network that does, if one exists.

Nope! Orange-branded, nearly-new handset, no fiddling.
Thanks all for sorting this out, though. It was seriously annoying my
daughter.

Interesting. I assume your daughter doesn't subscribe to Line 2, so it's
intriguing. You say "nearly" new, does this mean 2nd hand..? If so, maybe
the previous owner did something..? If not I have absolutely no idea
whatsoever..! You should *not* be able to select L2 on an Orange branded
phone without a L2 enabled SIM in it.
A thought - try another SIM in the phone and see if you can still select
L2 (assuming the other SIM doesn't have L2..!)

I'll try when she's home.
Nearly-new = was brand new when she got it, about two months ago. New
contract, ported-in O2 number, no line 2.
