I'm looking at purchasing an older model Nokia 6340i to use with
Cingular in the SF Bay Area and other parts of Northern California.

I need a phone like this because I have large fingers that cover 2-4
buttons on smaller phones and I have trouble reading the color screens
on a lot of the newer phones.

I've read a number of reviews on the 6340i. People seem to love them
    or hate them. Any feedback?

    Chas.

Feedback is pointless; as you say, "people seem to love them or hate them."

I have two of them that I use in the boondocks of the Northeast. However,
for most places I use the 6230, which is a better phone. There are not too
many places left where the 6340i is worth it, but there are a few with
    nothing but analog and TDMA.

The 6340i supports GSM 850/1900 Mhz, TDMA 800/1900 Mhz & AMPS 800 Mhz.

I'm most interested in the GSM performance.

I had AT&TWS TDMA service until a few months ago. I was working all
over the US until last summer. AT&T's service was good to great in a
lot of parts of the country but miserable around NYC and most of the
    west coast.

Now I'm working in Nothern California. I've been using Verizon at here
but their servce has gone south in some areas the past month. I'm
trying Sprint and I want to check out Cingular's GSM service.

AT&TWS and Cingular's services are not fully integrated in my area.
AT&T's TDMA and GSM networks are terrible and Cingular's TDMA coverage
is so-so. Cingular's GSM is supposed to be pretty good. My work takes
me from the SF Bay Area to rural areas where there's only analog
service so I need a phone that covers all the bases.

Folks that I talk with a lot that have newer phones with all the bells
and whistles have good coverage in the urban areas but lots of
problems with coverage in less populated places. My Verizon and Sprint
CDMA phones work well in most of my territory.

According to the 6340i specs it should provide pretty good coverage in
    my area.

Thanks for the feedback. I got a brand new 6340i and had it activated
yesterday. The speaker in the phone sounds really tinny and high
    pitched. I have a number of other Nokias phones, (6160, 3285, 3585i)
and they all sound very good. I wonder if it's this phone or a common
    problem with the 6340i Nokias.

Started reading the 6340i manual and discovered the sound Equalizer
was set to "Bright", that's why the phone sounded so tinny!
