Ok, so the Nokia 6680 has been out a little while now... so I am hoping
that now someone or some shop somewhere is offering a service to flash
my Orange 6680 with the official Nokia firmware (preferably the latest
release).... so I no longer have to put up with the shockingly
unstable, memory hogging, ugly, un-user-friendly adware screen that
Orange have crippled this otherwise very good phone with.
I live in Southampton, UK. Does anyone know anywhere near (or even not
so near) that can offer this service??!
Thanks in advance!

If you don't like it, move to Three
Personally, I prefer the screen. It's like a summary screen, informing you
of how many missed calls, texts, emails and calendar appointments you have
on one screen. Bonus!

The 2 places that do it in Southampton
Next Communications, Millbrook Road (near Millbrook roundabout
Carphone Warehouse, Hedge End - just off the M27 IIRC)

Really? How do you know that?
I've tried Next Communications, but they told me that would only flash
the phone with the Orange firmware! (ie, pointless).
I guess I'll try Carphone WH - but I expect they will say the same
thing won't they?

I think the networks are getting heavy with people who "neutralise" the
firmware.
It may even be illegal. Though I am not sure how...

My impression was that Orange's version is a bit intrusive - can't be
switched off. I'm on Vodafone and use the 6680's Active Standby option,
which can be switched off :-)

What SHOULD be illegal is for networks to install this kind of Adware
on perfectly good phones in the first place. Not only is it downright
irratating, it also causes the phone to becuase unstable... I am fed up
with having 8 key presses just to read a text. It should be one key
press, as Nokia intended.
When I ordered a Nokia 6680, I should GET a Nokia 6680 - not some
bastardised unstable version with half the functionality missing or
corrupted.

If they're official service centres, the chances are very low that they will
be willing or able to flash anything other than branded firmware to a
branded handset.

Theres a list of the service centres on the nokia website I think - the 2 I
listed are the only ones anywhere near this area (i.e shirley/millbrook) the
rest are winchester and further afield

hmm, I doubt they will want to flash an Orange nokia with non-Orange
firmware, but I guess I could phone round...
(unless you know any SC's that would defo do it?)

No I dont, sorry
they wanted to charge £25 (next) and £35 (cpw) for my out of warranty 6230
so I would make sure you get a free upgrade before your warranty runs out!

As much as they may not want to, they soon (if not already) won't be able to
at all.

You can find the nearest service centres by visiting Nokias website;
http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,77483,00.html
Normally speaking you cant get non branded fiirmware on branded phones
BUT depending where you go you may be able to get it done. i never
have any problems where I go and thats an official centre. You could
also try the mail in centre in Nottingham - I sent a 6600 to them once
to have the Orange branded firmware put on as I had the first version
and it was so buggy it was unusable and the Orange version was a
little newer and more stable - I then got the standard generic version
reflased when it was more stable.

You will soon. Nokia are putting systems in place that make the flashing
process automatic with no user intervention whatsoever. Once that's in
place you'll get what Nokia deem should be on the phone and no amount of
complaining, cajoling or bribing the NSC staff will help.
