Nokia 6230 phones seem unreliable and Nokia's response sucks

A warning to all... After owning a bunch of very reliable Nokia phones
earlier, I bought a 6230. Great features, but the quality sucks. The
first phone devloped a bad display (green pixels) & was replaced. On
the second phone, the regular speaker buzzed and distorted speech. I
sent it in for repair. They returned it unrepaired. I waited until it
got even worse (used my bluetooth headset mostly).

I sent it in, the third time I've sent in a repair in 1 year, and they
received it on 2 March. They say in their policy that repair time
should be 10-15 business days. I wrote them, asking them, after 4
weeks, to either repair the phone immediately or send me a new one.
    They refused.
Here is the mail I received, which just says, "tough luck, buddy."

I warned them I would be posting to alt.cellular.nokia- now let them
show up in usenet searches. Guess I'll be using my Motorola phone
permanently now. Sheesh- what a way to lose customers.

I'm very happy with mine. You do seem to have got a wrong 'un.

I don't know how you've looked after yours, but mine's been treated pretty
roughly and I still haven't scratched the camera lens, though the fascia
looks like it has seen some action!

I've had mine for almost two years now and I'm also very happy with it. I
think it's one of the best phones Nokia ever came up with.

Mine's 15 months old now and the only problem ever had with it was that it
needed a firmware update to stop the bluetooth going to sleep.

Me too happy with my 6230 and 6230i, but I think many share the view of the
OP on customer care service. Unfortunately competition does not seem to
enhance this area, my experience is that this is a similar problem for other
brands too (changing the phone brand from/to Nokia may not make a difference
here). Some service points are (positive) exceptions and should be made
    better known.

They have had my phone for 6 weeks now & the repair status shows simply
"repair in progress." Buyer Beware- if your Nokia phone breaks under
warranty you will be waiting for a long time.

Re: Nokia 6230 Piece of Junk

    The saga goes on.
My case was elevated to their Executive Resolution Team, probably
because I told them I was posting my experience on Usenet.

Well, they still can't get it right, two months after I sent in my
    phone.

After nagging them, they relented on their statement, "we won't send
you a new phone", and they sent me a replacement phone, alright.

It is locked to some network besides Cingular.
Nokia twice told me to get the code from Cingular.
I called Cingular, knowing it would be fruitless, only to have them
tell me that they wouldn't give me the unlock code for a phone from
    different provider.
    Which they wouldn't.

Back to Nokia. After 30 minutes on hold, a nice guy named Rick from
Nokia told me to call back tomorrow and ask f or the Executive
Response Team. You know, the same clueless people who can't
understand that they sent me a phone locked to another network that
    I can't use with cingular.

Here is the message I received after i first informed them that the
phone they sent me won't work with Cingular.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dear Robert,

    Thank you for your response.

We appreciate your interest in obtaining the restriction code and a
replacement graphite back cover for your replacement Nokia 6230 phone.

Nokia does not have access to restriction codes to unlock any Nokia
phones. Please contact your service provider Cingular Wireless at
toll-free 1-800-331-0500 for further information regarding this issue.

Robert, as a one-time customer courtesy we have replaced your Nokia
6230 back cover. Please allow five to seven (5-7)business days to
    receive the replacement back cover.

If you have any additional questions, please contact us. To ensure
proper handling, please continue to use the current subject line.

Thank you for choosing Nokia for your mobile needs.

Sounds to me they have palmed off another customers return to you rather
    than a new phone.

Yes, and if the original query was started within a year of supply it is
within guarantee and, as such, covered by the Sale Of Goods Act if you are
    in the UK. Are you?

Locked to another network, it is "not fit for the purpose" and Nokia are
    wholly responsible.

If you paid for it for Nokia, demand a full refund.

If Cingular supplied it, get on to them and tell them what's happened and
that you want a different phone from a different manufacturer and don't
    accept "no" for an answer.

Re: Nokia 6230 Piece of Junk

Thanks for your replies. I am in the USA. I got the phone from
LetsTalk.com, which provided the phone and acted as an agent for
Cingular when I got the phone as part of a two year contract extension.

In the USA, the company that sells you the phone doesn't have to
replace it under warranty. It defaults to the original manufacturer's
warranty, which is for one year.

I haven't yet pursued filing a complaint with the US Better Business
Bureau, but if this goes on any longer, I will.

Actually, thinking about it, they promised me a $250 refund if they
couldn't satisfy my needs by Wednesday two weeks ago. And, this phone
they sent me to satisfy my need for a phone (gasp) doesn't work, so
maybe I can just get the cash and buy someone else's brand of phone.

Here is the mail from 28 April where they are incapable of
comprehending that they have sent me a phone that requires an unlock
code to work on the Cingular network. Also, here is my reply to them.

    Hello Nokia,

    > Nokia wrote:
    > Robert, the phone restricted message you are receiving usually indicates that
    > you are attempting to use a locked phone on a different wireless network.

Right, so why did you send me a locked phone?!! This phone should be
brand new, unlocked, and never have been used on any other network.

    > Nokia does not have access to restriction codes or the ability to unlock phones. You
    > may contact Cingular Wireless at 1-800-331-0500 for more information on your Nokia
    > 6230b phone as far as restriction code and unlock code.

They (Cingular) didn't provide me with the phone!

I should be able to put in any working SIM card and be able to access
the network. Any phone you send to me should be unlocked or at least
    work on the Cingular network..

    > If you are using a Cingular Wireless Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card and getting
    > this message, there may be something wrong with your sim card.

I have used the same SIM card with my other 6230B and a Motorola V180.
It works on the Cingular network.

    > If not, please call Nokia Careline at 1-888-665-4228 and ask to speak to one of our

Great, more time of mine spent trying to get this stupid phone to work.

Re: Nokia 6230 Piece of Junk

By searching the Internet, I found out what the problem was. The 3G
SIM card used by Cingular causes the 6230B to come up in a locked
state. Using the MNC/MCC of Cingular/Pac Bell and the IMEI I was able
to unlock the phone- NokiaFREE.org is great. DCT4 calculators are
    readily available.

What I found amazing is that Nokia maintains over and over that they
can't unlock their own phones. The line was that, "once we put the
firmware for a network provider on the phone, only they can generate
the code." This is just a lie.

what they should have said is that "only they are allowed to generate
    the code."
