It's been a great phone, but it's starting to show it's age and it
occasionally locks up.
I'm in the UK and entitled to an free upgrade to pretty-much anything.
So here's what I need (not necc in priority order) as it's mostly a
"business" phone;
Longish battery life, a good camera, a radio, large contacts and calendar
capacity, a voice recorder (ideally), Bluetooth or something like it for
hands-free operation, and an ability to synch/backup content.
Also, internet/email and satnav would be handy, but not essential. I don't
use my present phone for email, so might not use the new one for it.
I don't keep a lot of other files or music on my phone and can't think of
any function (apart, possibly, from a torch) that I need. I think The World
Of Apps is likely to go unexplored :-)
What do you suggest?

OK, thank you Bob.

You are probably spoilt for choice, but I would recommend a Nokia N8 - all
the frills below plus you can transcribe your contacts etc.

I can't find an app that will put the video light on [my N79] :-((, but you
can just run the [video] camera.

Or an E7 - it's as slim as the N8 but has a physical QWERTY keyboard.

Well you won't be able to buy it tomorrow.
Bigger, heavier, same screen, poorer camera and flash, no FM transmit nor SD
card slot and projected as very expensive (£500 or £35pcm). There might be
other differences.
N8 reduced to £365 or £25pcm.

Same screen? It has a 4 inch display to the N8's 3.5, that uses the new
Clear Black technology for better sunlight viewing. They couldn't fit in
an SD card slot as well and still retain the slim form factor.
It would be better to compare the E7 to the C6-01 rather than the N8,
since both have same screen CBD technology and same camera unit.
Go with this if you want Symbian^3 with a physical keyboard, that's all.

I am willing to make the mistakes if someone else is willing
to learn from them.

Thanks, people.
Due to a small family crisis, I am actually now going shopping on Monday so
will be trying all those suggested.

Well I did say it was bigger (in all three dimensions)

OK

The N8 has has auto-focus, xenon flash and 12MP.

Nice phones , but a bit slow and clunky and not sold any more - I suppose
you might get one cheap on remainder...
AFAIK they won't support OVI navigation, but the web site said that about my
N79, but it does.

If you value a keyboard alone, all things else being same, then it's
better to compare 2 similar units. The E7 is identical to the C6-01 -
same camera unit, same CBD display (but 4" instead of 3.5"), same
OS/CPU/RAM. So you need to consider whether having a keyboard is worth
so much more.

Well if cost was an issue it is very similar to the N97 / N97Mini
The basic guts are very similar for all these phones
GSM
UMTS
GPS
FM receive (and transmit on some)
Wi-fi
Bluetooth
USB
audio / video out (+HDMI on newest)
Camera
Flash

No, they're not the same by a long shot.
Symbian^3 handsets are entirely different - the basic guts are the
OS,CPU and memory, and these are identical across all 4 current
Symbian^3 handsets - N8 C6-01,C7 and E7.
All 4 of these phones run on an ARM 11 680 MHz CPU with 256 MB RAM and
Symbian^3. This means that the OS look and feel is exactly consistent
across all of them.
There's no point even mentioning wifi/bluetooth/gps/camera etc as these
are extremely basic features for the mid to high end handsets we're
talking about and in 2011 mentioning those features is like saying my
phone can make calls.
N97 is a 3 year old handset that's horribly underpowered with low RAM,
had a resistive touchscreen and ran 5th Edition. I don't think it's even
available on the market anymore. And I'm mentioning the age because it
belongs to the pre-Android era. Since 2008, customers have gotten far
more demanding of high powered handsets with flashy UIs; S^3 at least
delivers on the performance if it still has a dated UI.
So if you're looking at the latest and greatest from Nokia, your choices
are between the high end comprising a hardware keyboard with bigger CBD
display(E7) and a monster camera(N8), or 2 mid range touchscreen
handsets with slightly lower specs on the camera and internal storage,
one of which has the same CBD as the E7 despite being the lowest priced
out of the 4 (C6-01).
