How turn off infrared on handset

Is it possible to turn off the infra-red on a handset like the 8310?

It times out on its own but sometimes I need to force it off sooner.

Can this be done?

As you say, it times out automatically, which should be fine. I can't see a
reason why you'd need to turn it off in a hurry.

All I can suggest if it's urgent to turn off infrared is to switch the phone
off and on again.

I use an IrDA link but the application can only take one handset at a
time so when I swap between handsets I have to take extra care to
make sue the previous handset is out of range. It would be better to
be able to turn IR off.
