Dear all,
Last week I purchased a Nokia 6610 mobile phone. Although it seems to be a
nice device, the overall sound quality is rather disappointing and, more
particularly, there is a worrying level of distortion using the normal phone
speaker. The distortion is also equally present on the included headset
(type HDS-3) but, not very noticeable on the build-in 'loudspeaker' (maybe
it is better masked). Distortion is independent of the volume setting of the
phone and occurs especially with sounds with rich harmonics (e.g. 's' and 't
').
Although almost everyone that tried the phone noticed the distortion, the
seller in the shop where I purchased the phone does not (he seems to hear
rather little..).
I bought this phone primarily for voice calls and feel rather unhappy with a
voice quality that is so much worse than the (often much simpler) phones I
have used before.
Maybe somebody can help me with these questions:
1.. Is this distortion problem unusual for this phone type or do other
people have similar experiences?
2.. I was wondering whether the problem relates to the voice coder
settings (EFR, full rate or half rate). I tried to change the settings
(using *3370# and *4720# ) but the phone gives no feedback whatever which
codec is activated (it just asks the question 'change active speech codec?'
and then turns off). There seemed to be little difference. Is there any way
to see which codec is activated (a netmonitor or something similar)?
3.. Is the rather mediocre overall sound quality a more general problem of
recent Nokia phones (or specific Nokia series)? Should I opt for another
brand?
The phone has firmware version 4.74, dated 14-4-03.
Your reply is appreciated,
Rudi Bekkers

I have also noticed this exact same problem.
I tried calling Nokia Care today, and after asking about the problem,
taking all my details, including serial number, they just told me to
take it to a Nokia Care Centre. Grr.
I'm also a little annoyed at the noise the case makes when vibrating.
This phone is only 2 weeks old - I think this may be an issue only
on the new phones, based on comments from other users.
