how can i tell which version of software is running on a nokia 8310
from the serial number/other numbers on the box? which old versions
should i stay away from?
I want to know cause i read that these phones sometimes turn off by
themeselves and that this is related to software probs.
I know about the #0000# code but the local salesman who stocks 8310 is
a prick and wont let me open the box and charge the cell phone before
i buy it.
thanks,
Sam

Tell the salesman that by being a tosser, he's lost a sale, and then go and
buy it somewhere else.

Hmm, so you expect someone to make stock worthless by opening it before
he's seen the colour of your money..? What if once the box is opened you
change your mind..? He can't re-seal the box and the next customer is
hardly going to buy a box that's been opened over one that hasn't..!
(Well, would *you* buy a previously opened box not knowing what's been
done to the contents..?)

Here we go again! Are we on for another row then Ivor? ;-)

What about it?

Don't see why not, I just have with a T610 (mind you, I did check the
joystick counter and total talktime in the service menus first). Nice deal
at the Link at the moment. BTW, can anyone confirm if HSD tariff on Orange
still has inclusive care?

It's a good point, but I would never.... and again, I say NEVER buy a phone
that I hadn't been able to examine prior to purchase. For all you know, the
box could have been dropped and the handset smashed to pieces. Whenever
I've connected a contract phone, I've never taken the word of the IMEI
sticker on the box, it can (and has on several ocassions) be totally
different from the one on the handset - cock-ups happen.

Do you want the quick 5 minute argument or the full half hour..?!

Steve will no doubt be able to tell you ;-) I suppose I might be prepared
to buy one where the box had been opened subject to a hefty discount and
*written* promise of a brand new sealed box replacement if anything went
wrong, but not otherwise.

Thinking about it, I must admit to wondering what Orange shops do if a
customer has a quick change of mind, they open the box in your presence
and register it on line there and then, so you can see it working before
you take it away. Also, what do they do if someone comes in and wants to
buy a phone as a gift for someone..? I can't say I'd be very impressed on
Christmas morning unwarapping an opened box..! Not that anyone has ever
bought me a phone for Christmas :-(

What the hell, let's got for the full monty! :-)

Also to make sure that the phone that's in the box actually IS the one that
the sticker on the box says it is. Orange are the worst culprits for this -
IMEI's not matching. As for what they do with them.... no idea. As for the
independents, most will just sell it anyway, and in the case of the T610,
it's not easy to reset the counters so it's pretty easy to demonstrate that
the phone is new and unused.

Now that is a good point, and one I hadn't considered. Mind you, I'd be
even less impressed if I opened the box to discover that there was either no
phone in there, that it didn't work, or that the IMEI didn't match the box.

> bought me a phone for Christmas :-(
Aww... bless! Buy yourself one then. Don't know how much longer the Link
will carry on giving T610's free on HSD - it must be costing them a fortune.
If you want a laugh, try getting CPW to price match.
