    Hey,

I'm thinking of getting one of those 3rd party USB data cables for my Nokia
6100, instead of the very expensive DKU-5.

Are they the same? Can I use Nokia PC Suite with it?

I've tried a serial cable which was a waste of time really.

    Cheers all

the only real difference is the name. and the way PC suite operates.

Over the past two years, nokia has been extremely anti-competitive. their
handsets often don't work with third party equipment, from data cables to
bluetooth adaptors (which is an open standard, that IMO nokia illegally
closed off) the way they write the PC suite software requires the use of
specific hardware, and while technically there is no reason for a method not
to work, the nokia program writers decided to actively close all other
routes. their claim is laziness, that they are only writing for the specific
device, to make it easier on themselves, but I don't believe that for a
    minute.

normally you can safely ignore the 'use only official accessories' wording
in any manual, but Nokia have taken steps to enforce it, to the point you
end up buying nokia just to avoid the hassle of trying to get something to
work. It even goes to the point of making their products incompatible with
recognised standards. It wouldn't surprise me if they made a phone that
would only work with a nokia installed cell site. much of the third party PC
software works fine with third party cables, its just PC suite that throws a
    wobbly.

i bought a third party USB cable that is DKU-5 compatible for my 7250i
got it off EBAY, works with pc suite and any other phone software
about half the price of nokia cable!!
