What's the best software to use to change the IMEI on a phone? and can it be
any number you pick or does it have to come from a phone that is currently
working??

like i posted previously, damaged phone during an eeprom write when saving
an SMS message....happens heaps!

when rebuilding a flash you need to reprogram the IMEI if you flash using a
virgin EEPROM

the virgin EEPROM flash writes out the IMEI into garbage and in order to get
the phone to work again,

the orginal IMEI must be inputted...not a different one...the original one!

then update FAID and presto...phone fixed....

end of story...

I have had to try get a new IMEI number in my phone.

I got fed up with my phone company and thier bad service,so I 'sold' my
phone and claimed the insurance and got another one.

only prob, the IMEI was rejected by my friend who bough the phone off me.

I was trying to use the old IMEI no.` off an ericsson that died on my
several months prior to this.

after much fiddling about, it got done, works fine now.

ghosted..........

I tell you what though, it's a hell of a lot easier to buy a new phone. I
was just trying to get what I thought was "my money's worth" outta the ph
co.

Unfortunately if somebody has sold their phone and then claimed on the
insurance, then we all know they are a thief !
We might exclaim 'Oh no, they're a thief '.
We might also exclaim 'One more theft to help push the insurance premiums
up'.
So at the end of the day, when all is said and done, it will be the honest
users who end up paying for the thief's new phone via our insurance
premiums.
I wonder if the police (an organisation paid for by honest people to help
protect them from theft) would be interested ?

Doubt it. This thread is boring me to ****, that's for sure. Suspect the
police have got better things to do with taxpayer resources.

ultimately cost you and I money, then why bother reading it - and why on

Oof! With rapier wit of that calibur to contend with, I'm clearly out of my
depth on this one. But what the hell, I'll give it a go...

I bothered reading the thread because I follow this ng and have a casual
interest in most mobile-related topics.

As for replying, well it's just too easy to wind up the moralists on here to
resist it when people start barking on about police and 5 year prison terms
every time someone asks a perfectly reasonable question about IMEIs. FFS,
if you don't know or can't/won't help then don't but is there really any
need to embark on a moral crusade?

Get yourself a clue: people will reprogram IMEIs on older (often stolen)
handsets and these handsets will be reused. The perpetrators will very
seldom be caught due to the incredibly simple nature of the operation and
the fact it can be done by pretty much anyone, anywhere. Rest safe in the
knowledge that at least those phones are being used by someone and not just
rusting away... hey - there's always an upside and this time it's found in
the environmental benefits of extended phone lifetimes.

Nokia and the other handset manufacturers are now well aware of the problem
and have already made it much harder / imposssible to change IMEI on newer
handsets, so this crime will become less common over the next few years.
