I submitted a request to transfer my two Sprint numbers to my two
T-Mobile phones on Monday, Nov. 24. Over a week later, it still hasn't
gone through.
After a lot of calls (>1 hour on hold) it finally got escalated at
T-Mobile. The escalation guy says they have talked to Sprint, but
haven't been able to figure out the reason its stuck. The latest
problem (there's been a lot of "first level validation errors" and
timeouts) is that Sprint doesn't "see" the request from T-Mobile, and
neither company can figure out why. He also said something about
unexpected error codes that they need to research.
Just wondering if others are having similar problems or if anyone
knows more about the systems involved. Apparently there is a central
system set up by the FCC that brokers the "port" in/out requests.
Nothing seems to be real-time and it seems like everyone is still
debugging their systems. Is it really as much of a design mess as it
seems?
I was hoping the FCC mandated how long the process can take, so that
carriers can't drag their feet when losing customers. The wireless
industry "agreed to 2 1/2 hours", which the FCC "supports and
encourages", but apparently there's no recourse:

Oh well, I'm forwarding my number. Sprint charges $.10/min, but I
guess I can just not answer and call back.

PS: I switched from Sprint because T-Mobile offers a good, full
Internet access plan ($20/mo unlimited) and has the bluetooth
SonyEricsson T610 (aka T616 on AT&T/Cingular). I didn't want to wait
for the T608 from Sprint and I read some bad reviews of it.
I really like the T610 -- it's a great design and so far the reception
is great. Bluetooth works, though it was a pain to configure. Tip:
transfering contacts is easier through XP's "My Bluetooth Places" than
through the phone's application or the software that comes with
Logitech's bluetooth mouse.

Your experience is not unusual. I have been wiating for my port to push
through since Saturday (11/29). Mine is T-Mo to Cingular. It's not expected
to be completed until Friday. Cingular offered me a substitute cell phone in
the interim. Of course it only adds to my frustration when others are able
to port their lines in 15 minutes!
It's hit or miss, but my local Sprint store informed me that they have some
folks with similar issues (either moving in or out).
(I'm keeping my Sprint line with Sprint!)

You're *not* alone. I'm watching one account that ported in to use from=20
two other carriers. Different problems from each carrier, but the same=20
result: it's still not yet complete.

I am having the same problem going from Verizon to Sprint, it has been 9 days,
2 out of my 3 phones were switched in 7 days, they told me the other one would
not go through until this Fri. Oh well I guess thats what happens when you jump
into something early on...

Sprint tells me neither of my #'s can be ported. Yet Cingular tells me they
can port them. If I didn't have a brand new Samsung i330 siting here wating
service there would be no way I'd be waiting for Sprint :-(

I have been waiting since 11/24 also to be ported OFF Sprint.
Over 15 hours in 3 ways on the phone between Cingular and Sprint.
I have been hung up on by 5 people at Sprint, including the PCR Department.
If you get a Sprint person on the phone, they may give you the information
you are looking for, but once you tell then you have the other carrier on
the line to assist in the port, they hang up or pretend they can't hear you.
The keep giving the runaround with myself and Cingular, saying they sent the
response back, but they have not.
It took 5 days and collecting the employee ID's of Sprint CSR people to even
get someone to admit the request even existed.
I will be posting the entire story if I do not get a response by the end of
the day including all the phone numbers and names of all the people at
Sprint that were so willing to help with my problem.
Try to get your carrier to give you the Port Request Number by accident and
then when the carrier you are porting from says the record does not exist,
have them look it up in the SMG (System Management Gateway). They may claim
they can't find it, but it's there.
I am also filing a suit against Sprint for any costs involved in the process
(all the hours) plus air time.
I think the only way to convince them to start porting numbers it to picket
at the stores.
Is there anyone organizing a class action against Sprint yet?

Things went from bad to worse. The day after I posted this message,
someone at Sprint, for reasons they cannot explain to me, cancelled my
primary number instead of porting it out.
Of course, this happened the day I was going on vacation. I can't
believe I waited the past few months for number portability to go into
effect so that I could switch carriers without changing my number with
friends, family, and work, and now my mobile number reports that it is
out of service.
Sprint has been trying since Thursday Dec. 4 to reinstate my number so
1) my phone works again and I can receive calls, and 2) we can try the
port process again. Apparently Sprint was unable to reactive because
the port out request was still active.
Today Sprint says that the port request is cancelled and they have
finally been able to reactivate my number, but it will take 8 hours.
So hopefully I can start the whole process again tonight.
I'll be reading this over and filing a complaint about Sprint PCS:

To be clear, I would never try to port my numbers on the day I was
going on vacation.
I put in the request to port my numbers on Monday, Nov. 24. I posted
the original message above on Dec. 3, and went on vacation the next
day.
I thought a week and a half would be enough time to get the number
port done.

they have received the request to port from AT&T. I haven't been able
to get to that. I would join you if you decide to file a suit against

Sprint has been dragging their feet on EVERYTHING. Inbound and
outbound.
The FCC Chairman's office decided to tackle the number of complaints,
not the type of complaints... and suggests that persons having
difficulty with a carrier to file an online FCC complaint
(http://www.fcc.gov/) and they'll probably do the same thing they did
to AT&T... which is send a demand to shape up or pay out.
We're going to file / join a class action, based on the 38 hours of
personal time spent getting the problems fixed. What was even SADDER
was that we pinpointed the issue and provided possible solutions!!
For a company of that magnitude to dismiss something that would have
saved them hundreds of thousands in profit, countless manhours, etc.
I'm sadded that we've signed a two-year contract. If there's no
customer service up front, I shudder to think of what will happen over
the next six hundred some odd days. I'd rather be chained to a
cannibal, I think.

FYI, four weeks later T-Mobile now admits that they have my number
(Sprint told me the out of service message is not theirs), but because
of some computer error TM is unable to assign it to my account.
Manager "Mike" @ TM filed a "technical ticket" last week, but they
have been unable to get any status on this ticket.
I'm on hold with the TM port center (always >1 hour) again trying to
get hold of "Mike" who promised but failed to call last Friday with a
status update.
Obviously this is very frustrating. Now I'm really stuck. I don't know
whether to let TM continue to work on it, or ask them to cancel the
number port (again -- they've tried before and were unable to). If
it's cancelled, I'm worried the number will go back to Sprint but I'm
sure I will have trouble getting the number back from them.
Has anyone submitted a complaint to [email protected] and gotten any
kind of a response? I've submitted a couple of complaints in the past
four weeks but have not gotten anything other than an automated
response.
Is anyone else in the same boat -- waiting since Nov. 24 for a port to
T-Mobile to go through?
