After over three years with Sprint PCS I today ordered a Sony Ericsson
    T610 and T-Mobile 600-minute, unlimited-nights plan from Amazon.com.

I am making the move because of two reasons: 1) Bluetooth and 2) free
Internet access over GPRS (I think I can live without access to the
T-Zones WAP deck). Over the holidays I will be staying with family in
a location without a computer, and look forward to being able to
access the Web with the phone and my Bluetooth-enabled Sony Clié UX50
PDA. If I find the need for access to SSH, FTP, or other ports
compelling, I'll go ahead and order the $20 T-Mobile Internet
    Unlimited option.

I am *not* making the move because of unhappiness with Sprint PCS's
prices. Though $40 for 600/unlimited minutes, free Internet, and
unlimited nights/weekends is better than the $55 I currently pay for
500/3000 minutes without a contract, I am sure I could find a current
Sprint PCS that, except the network access, more or less compares. And
my ancient Sanyo 4500 has served me well.

But with no signs Sprint PCS will ever offer the T608 or any other
Bluetooth-enabled phone, and the much higher prices (and, admittedly,
throughput) for PCS Vision versus what T-Mobile will charge, I feel
    like I had no choice.

The T608 is really closer to the T200 series of phones than the T600
series. The T610 is available FREE after rebate from many independant
TMobile agents, and the T616 is available FREE (until 12/31 at least,
from AT&T) and from folks like www.intelenetwireless.com with rebates
greater than the cost of the phone.

The T600's have no speaker phone, but the Sanyo 4500 was quickly
replaced by the Sanyo 4700 in part because its speaker phone was so
buggy. In many cases if you complained you'd get a free switch. I know,
    I did.

Just beware that the word is that T-Mobile will discontinue port 80 (http)
access from T-Zones sometime next year so you'll likely be faced with the
    $20 montly add-on.

No speakerphone no big deal - BT headset is better.

Same here. I have the same $40 plan also and I can use all the ports on my
laptop. Why should I pay the extra $20? As all the ports are open, I'm
going to change my plan to the basic $20 voice plan (I don't do voice calls
much) once I received my rebates which require $40 or more plans. $20 total
for unlimited data and ports, awesome!
T-mobile also lets you choose your own # and I got my favorite # without
calling the customer service (just via mail)! I found a trick for how to
check if a # is still available.

Any idea where you heard that from?

They're advertising the ability to do e-mail right now, so you should
be able to run any service you want over various other open ports
presuming you can set up your own computer system. They need to leave
    ports open for e-mail service.

No, my trick does not need a call or by any means to bother a current #
    holder.

No, this is not a trick and you are annoying other people. With my trick,
you can check a number's availibility solely on t-mobile's website. Just
    use your creativity.

I am on the verge of doing the exact same thing for the same reasons.
Unfortunately, I will have to fork over two termination fees, but I
will break about even with the Amazon deal.
I would love to hear some input on T-Mobile service in the Ga-FL
    region (especially Savannah).

    What ports? 22 for SSH?

Can you do HTTPS? I can't log in to Microsoft Passport to do hotmail.

Yes I can do https and whatever.
