    My contract expires midnight (I guess) on the 20th. I have established an
    account with TMobile, and have a phone+number that work fine. My objective
    is to transfer my SPCS number to TMobile, and not pay for an unused
    additional month at Sprint.

    If I call TMobile to initiate the transfer, and Sprint gets word a minute
    before the contract expires, they'll zap me with the early cancellation fee.
    If it's a minute AFTER the contract expires, they'll hit me for another
    month. Quandary!

    One option is to change that business account to a 'minimum' one, reducing
    the cost of the additional month yet maintaining the contract.

    I have two other lines that will remain with Sprint -- leverage?

    What's my best solution?

    Not necessarily. If your port occurs after the bill date for your=20
    cycle, yes, the added month is charged. Once the port-out occurs,=20
    though, the portion of the month you did not use would get credited back=20
    to you on the final bill.

    So, yes, we charge, but we don't keep it.

    Question: What would happen if someone cancels service, gets the final bill,
    pays it and then looks to go to another carrier. Will he still be able to
    get the same # or does he have to start the process before canceling his/her
    existing service? Also, once the carrier gets notice from the new carrier
    about the port do they cease service immediately? I would think so but I'm
    not sure. Given that the process is taking so long right now that would mean
    that the person is without service at all until the process is done.

    You cancel service prior to porting your number to another carrier, and you
    lose the telephone number.

    Not until the porting process is complete.

    Until the porting process is completed, you are suppose to get service with
    both carriers.

    Absolutely true - it was stressed to me by CB wireless (AT&T) to not cancel
    my Sprint service UNTIL the ported number went through. I started the
    process a day before the last day of my billing cycle - and about 29 hours
    later Sprint actually deactivated me getting online - and deactivated the
    phone before I had the ported number working on my new phone. Sprint told
    me as long as the number has ported successfully you don't have to call them
    and cancel your account as it is done automatically. Good luck! DonnaB

    Then do nothing. When you transfer your Sprint number over, T-mObile
    handles the cancellation for you.

    DO NOT CANCEL your Sprint service BEFORE you do the transfer. if you
    do, you will NOT be able to port your number.

    If you do that, you lose the right to your old number and won't be able
    to port it.

    Are you absolutely certain that the last partial month is pro-rated? In the
    analogous situation of someone cancelling within the first 14 days, Sprint
    very clearly does *not* pro-rate--i.e., Sprint charges the full activation
    fee and one full month of service.

    Yeah, but that's not analogous. Different situations. =20
    When a customer cancels service mid-cycle, we pro-rate plan=20
    minutes, and anything beyond that proration gets charged as=20
    overage. The monthly charge gets equally prorated.

    Precisely because, unlike that 14-day trial, this is money=20
    you've (theoretically) already paid us. After all,=20
    EVERYONE pays their bills the day they arrive, right?

    know how it works at other carriers). The phone can *make* calls, but=20
    VM doesn't work, and our phone will not receive them until the port-in=20
    is complete.

    During the course of porting in to SPCS, you can dial *2 on your SPCS=20
    phone and there will be an option to check the port status. I have no=20
    idea what that sounds like for a customer, though. And I don't know=20
    what a user would experience with, say, Cingular, if they were porting=20
    out from us.

    From one wireless provider to ourselves (and, again, I can't speak for=20
    others), we program the phone with the number they're transferring in=20
    and they can use it for outbound service, although inbound won't work=20
    until the port is complete.

    From a landline provider to us, which can take 30 days, then you're=20
    right. We temporarily assign a number until the port-in is complete,=20
    and then the customer calls in to have their transferred number=20
    programmed into the phone.
