Well I have been a happy Sprint customer for a year. I especially enjoyed
using Vision with Sanyo 4900/laptop/cable when I traveled in my RV. But
alas, I got such a deal from Cincinnati Bell wireless I had to switch.
Yesterday I signed up - and 30 hours later my number is fully ported to my
new phone - a Nokia 3595. The deal I got was for 1000 anytime minutes -
unlimited nights and weekends - no roaming on AT&T network - long distance
included for $39.99 per month with a one time $30 activation fee and a free
phone the rep threw in (it was a demo with 8 hours on it) works fine. No
contract required. For a time this morning calls made to the Sprint phone
went into voice mail. Then the account was deactivated. Then the CB
wireless (AT&T) account was giving the message that "this number is no
longer in service" - so the porting is not entirely without problems. So
now I have a Sanyo 4900/4 batteries/3 cables and the usual chargers etc.
Not sure if I should try to sell on eBay. I did call customer service - who
told me you do not have to cancel your service - it is done automatically -
and when I tried to sign in online - I couldn't. In addition they told me
once the last bill is paid the ESN number is good to go. I did not have a
contract with Sprint. Not sure if this info is of use to anyone but at
least porting my Sprint number wasn't too painful - but I guess I will have
to wait for the final bill to arrive in the mail. If anyone needs a 4900
with tons of stuff make me an offer. DonnaB

Might as well try ebay - The 4900's go from $60-120 there.
Would be thoughtfull to include ESN info right in your ad,so people can
    check the phone before bidding.

Maybe I'm just nuts, but I looked at eBay for a 5300 before I was going
to spcs... There were plenty of em all from the same bulk seller. I
find the check to see if the ESN is stolen kind of insulting in that
case. Sigh. The guy was a bulk seller and I took the check ESN thing
to imply that either he got is supply of 5300s from a rather heated
source or something. But I ended up paying $229 from the Sprint
website. Now almost a month into my service I am tempted to get rid of
my Verizon aircard (too bad it would cost entirely too much as in
etf+equipment) and perhaps my Sprint phone and go to T-Mobile and pay
$100/month and get 1000 min +9pm w/Friday weekends and unlimited
    wap/pictures and laptop connectivity. Sigh

Sorry bout the non Sprint stuff in here but why should the buyer have to
check an ESN? The valid answer is that any monkey can sell on eBay, but
then I think that should change too. lol

<Sorry bout the non Sprint stuff in here but why should the buyer have to
check an ESN?>To be on the safe side! The phone doesn't have to be stolen
but if the person didn't pay the final bill Sprint told me they would not
activate it for the new owner. But if I were to sell it on eBay the proper
thing to do would be for ME to make sure it was good to go and of course
post the ESN in the auction.

One other thing on my switch to Cincinnati Bell (AT&T) - according to their
website you get 2 free months of data/pictures which I have no clue how it
compares to Vision because you pay for data differently and from what I
understand you can't hookup the laptop to the cell and get online. In
addition, YIKES, not only can you NOT check your usage on online you can't
call and get your usage. I found this out AFTER I signed up. The only way,
I guess, is to look on your phone call log which gives total minutes used
but lumps the anytime with the night time and the 611 minutes. Thus, Sprint
has some features I really took for granted ;-( . DonnaB

The buyer doesn't have to, but there are enough slimebags and there is
enough fraud out there in the real world that only a stupid buyer won't.

Don't want to check your ESN? Want to buy from a guy even after he refuses
to give you the ESN? Your choice. Your loss if you get screwed.

As a follow up to Steven's post, if the phone sold on eBay (or from anywhere
else outside of SPCS), was stolen, it can't be activated. If the phone had
been reported lost by a SPCS user, and found by someone else, it may not be
allowed to be activated. If the phone was used on an account with $$ due on
the account, it won't be allowed to be activated till that unpaid balance is
    cleared up ...

Wow, Donna, I was just going to reply to your orginal post since I know
you as the original "Vision RV-er" , and then I saw THIS! You
mentioned that it roams on the AT&T network. Which AT&T network, the
TDMA or GSM one? In either case, I doubt it's going to be anywhere near
as fast as Vision (GSM should be faster). What you gonna do on the road
    now?

Hi, Donna. You don't mention anything about data via AT&T. Did you
give up having wireless data access?

Gosh, I think you might have been able to work a deal with retention
to get nights starting at 7 PM. That would have been at least an extra
    2400 minutes/month.

I was a Cincinnati Bell customer for 5 years and never had any problems with
billing or going over my family share plan minutes. But we wanted web
access and their pricing just seemed ridiculous to me especially since you
had to get a GSM only phone to get it. And the only picture phone they had
cost $400 at the time of the switch. So we switched to Sprint and bought
the 8100 phones. It's to early to tell if we'll be happy with Sprint but so
    far so good.

All the comments in here about poor customer service have me a bit confused.
I've had nothing but friendly helpful calls to CS so far. I'm sure I'll
probably get a CS rep that's having a bad day eventually but so far it's
    been fine.

GSM data (GRPS) is not faster than CDMA data (1xrtt). In fact, it is
    significantly slower.

I tried for the 7 pm - no go unless I signed a 2-year contract with Sprint!
BTW I really did love my Sanyo 4900 and Vision access with laptop (on the
road). With the free AT&T Nokia 3595 phone - it appears I can only access
the internet via the phone - no laptop cables available - so I may purchase
the Nokia 3200 BUT from what I can tell I will not be able to connect it to
the laptop and just dial #777 like I did with Vision using the AT&T data
plan! I am googling now to find out what I got myself into :-( However,
more than likely we will be doing wi-fi when RVing (example all Flying Js
have access) that is my latest project - researching wi-fi hot spots that
    are RV accessible! DonnaB

That's what I said (see the "in either case" quoted above); the
parenthetical "GSM should be faster" referred to data over GSM (i.e.,
    GPRS) vs. TDMA.

Although -- come to think of it -- if she were using one of the as of
now very rare EDGE networks, that would actually be faster than 1xrtt,
    no?

Perhaps ... but the carrier for EDGE is a CDMA based technology I believe.
The carrier for GSM (up to what T-Mobile, Cingular and AT&T are using) is
TDMA based (don't confuse with TDMA-136 ... which is legacy TDMA that AT&T
    and Cingular still use).
