Cotnfused about Nokia 3588i, SprintPCS, and modem

Hi,

We're getting a Nokia 3588i. According the Nokia website, there's software
to use the phone as a wireless modem.

If I get a cable (DKU-5) and download the Nokia software, will I be able to
connect to my own normal ISP and use this setup as a dialup modem?

Not sure, as I'm not familiar with the Nokia all that much. What I do know
though, is if you can get it set up to dial up your ISP, you will be charged
$0.39/min.

My understanding is that you'll be charged your standard per-minute
rate, as included in your plan, consuming in-plan minutes, n&w minutes
or overage minutes in the same fashion as a voice call. Your Nokia is
not a Vision phone. I'm finding that some people are being told that it
is. That means that you can find actual connection speeds to be under
14400 bps.

Before buying, consider a Vision phone, which offers higher speeds. Be
sure to research it, as there are some ways that your Nokia can excel
over a Vision phone.

FYI, we're mainly getting the Nokia for just voice for my daughter when
she's away at college. The reason that I was asking was that I found info
on the phone that says it has a modem, and was curious if I'd be able to use
it with a PC and my own ISP occasionally. If that is true, I might consider
swapping my current phone with her so that I could (very) occasionally use
the Nokia to dialup when I'm travelling.

I know that at a minimum, I'd need to get a cable for this (DKU-5), but I
don't want to do that unless I know that it'd work with SprintPCS, and I
don't want to sign up for any special data plans....

It can probably be done. If we haven't hobbled the data=20
functions completely by not having a browser programmed=20
into it.

You won't use plan minutes, nor will the $5 Wireless Web=20
add-on help you. What will happen, if it works, is that=20
you'll get charged $0.39/min while you do it, and you max=20
out, under ideal connection, at 14.4kBps.

A dial-up connection to an "ISP" like AOL (AOL itself=20
prefers not to have that label, something like "Online=20
Service") get recognized by the phone *and* out system as a=20
"circuit-switched" data call, and thus qualifies as=20
Wireless Web usage. However, it never utilizes the=20
Wireless Web Servers, and so will never be covered by any=20
billing package that covers Wireless Web. Except for=20
Casual Usage.

I have never had this problem and have used WW for many hours at a time
this way for a long time, especially when traveling at night. There is
no question that WW covers it, the system recognizes them as Data calls,
and charges them to either your anytime or weekend/night minutes so it
is advisable to use it only at night since it is extremely slow.
Basically, if you are using WW, you wil never be charged as data if you
have the $5 wireless web package (even though it is ungodly slow unlike
Vision which is just slow). On some phones you can hack the phone to
get it to 19.2k (Sanyos)

And you don't need an ISP. Dial #2932 and use WEB (user) and WEB
(password) (although you can certainly use an ISP # if you want).


I dont know how it would be done on a PC, but you would need to download
the Sprint PCS modem script, and find the right USB or serial cable for
the phone to use it. On a Mac it is pretty easy and a google search
will surely yield lots of ways to do it.

HOWEVER, if you are serious about this you would be much better off with
Tmobile and a bluetooth phone than with WW, since it is so slow in this
kind of Sprint configuration it is almost unusable (except maybe for
telnet). Tmobile's high speed data is not as fast as AT&TWS or Vision
but it is much cheaper and easier to use than Sprint for sure. In fact,
for $20 a month you can get a card in your PC from Tmob and use it as
much as you want

If you're actually using a Wireless Web phone, like the=20
Samsung A460, just to use an example, you're exactly right. =20
The Nokia 3588i isn't such a phone.

What phone were you using above?
