No, it won't. Currently, only the following phones will=20
access it:
+ Nokia 3588i
+ Treo 600
+ Samsung VI660
+ Sanyo VM4500
+ Toshiba VM4050 (so I'm told. This is an imminent=20
release)
I have not seen it on either of the "pure" Ready Link=20
phones.
And the only older model currently slated to be upgraded to=20
use this mobile-originated SMS is the LG1200.

so these other phones will still require you to go online to send/receive

What is it that "True SMS" will offer over and above what I have with
ShortMail and PCS mail on the 5300 now?
(I have it set up to 'notify me' on incoming...)
I get the message...I reply.....

Re: true SMS?
how do you reply? maybe my phone is just old...when my friend sends me a
message with just my #, i have to go online to read it....if he uses the
full address, i can read it, but there is no option to reply...

Re: true SMS?
True sms is phone originated using a binary code for two way text
messaging. It does not require any sort of internet access. GSM phones have
always used it and in europe texting is the cheapest way to use a mobile
phone. It is the basis for wireless commerse that may or may not ever make
it here. I have always thought than in theory the CDMA platform would be so
much better at it but for the older phones in the Sprint network there isnt
any way to retofit. I do find it interesting that the Nokia platform has it
but cannot get on the wireless web or Vision.

Re: true SMS?
The Nokia 3585i and 3588i were set up w/o the web browser being operational.
These were designed to be non-Vision phones from the beginning. The 3586i
and 3589i/3587i for other carriers have the browsers enabled. The 3588i is
SMS enabled, the 3585i is not.

It's truly "phone to phone" communications. Shortmail=20
isn't bad, overall, when it works, but it *requires* you be=20
able to get online to use it. For very quick, few-word=20
communications, it's ponderous. And, in my opinion, that's=20
what text messaging has always been about.

So I am going out in the next day to possibly get the Nokia 3588i. I
dont need the vision but the occassional text message would be really
nice. Is SMS active as of today?
Thanks

What John Richards said. As of right now, it's slated for=20

Its *going* to happen. That much I feel comfortable=20

Re: true SMS?
Will AOL Instant Messenger also work better when SMS is available? It
is annoying to get the notification to check for messages instead of
just getting the message and answering back.

SMS has nothing to do with AIM, so I doubt it.
