Adding 2 phones to my service

I am a current Sprint wireless user. I have 2 phones enabled. I have
been with Sprint since 1999 and still am using the original phones. I
have not had a contract since 2001.
I have seen a sale on Amazon for Sanyo 8100 phones. What is to stop me
from activating 2 new lines of service under a 2 year contract and then
cancelling my original phones. The phone numbers are not that important
to me. The reasoning is I can get these phones for free after the
rebates only if activating new lines of service through Amazon. Can this
be done or will Sprint say I can't do this. Obviously, with no contract
I can go wherever I want and get a deal on phones. I just would rather
stay with Sprint.

You may buy the phones through Amazon but you'll still have to be activated
in Sprint's system, and my guess is that there will be a problem, maybe,
based on how many phones you can have on your account. Usually, the carrier
decides allow you X number of phones based on what they think you'll be able
to pay for, which with Sprint is based strictly on your credit score from
when you originally signed up (unless you ask them to run your credit again,
for example if your credit is better now than it was a couple years ago and
you want to see if you can add phones to your account that they wouldn't let
you add before).

If you are marked as being able to have four phones on your account, this
might work.

I'd call Sprint or talk to a store rep and see how many phones you are allowed
to have. I was rather surprised, given my credit status when I opened my
account, to find out that they will allow me one line in addition to the one
I already have in service...

Hmmm, interesting question. I'm guessing that SPCS would run a credit check
on you and notice that you already had coverage with them. In looking over
http://tinyurl.com/25ejx , you could get two Samsung 1000's for $150, which
is $150 more than Amazon's deal.

Keep in mind that there are differences between your older phones and the
newer ones. On the older phones, you were using WW, which used minutes on
your plan, and with the new phones, it would be Vision, which doesn't use
any minutes.

I'd suggest calling SPCS, telling that you've been comparing other carriers,
that you are happy with SPCS, would like to stay with them, and see if they
can work out the same deal as you've explained above. Considering that you
aren't locked in, and can move to another carrier, they might be able to
match your deal above, and get a better deal in terms of minutes, etc. at
the same time.

Good advice!

Have I read that if you have had the same phone on line for 18 months,
yu are elgible for the same deals any other new customer would be
elgible for, at best buys etc and I assume amazon--but I would give
c/s a call too--then you can jsut take the best deal

I'm not sure that's correct. The phone deals at Amazon (for example)
typically have two rebates, one coming from Sprint ($130, which he would
qualify for) and the other rebate through Amazon. He won't qualify for the
Amazon rebate since it requires a new line of service.

If your credit is good enough for Sprint to allow 4 lines, that would
work nicely, although you would normally have to choose amongst current
service plans for your minutes available for the new lines.

If the numbers aren't important then get the phones from Amazon and when
they arrive and you're ready to activate kill the old lines then activate
the new phones --- this can be done all on the same call to customer
"service" (try to at least get an English speaking person for this
process --- to ease the transition). They might tell you it's not proper or
something but you're out of contract and if this is what it takes to get the
deal YOU want then do it. Just keep in mind who the customer is, and
approach it like that.

I will tell you what is interesting here. I called Sprint and advised
them that I was going to do exactly what you have stated. They basically
told me there is nothing to stop me from doing so. They actually advised
there was a way to keep my original numbers if I wanted them while
activating the phones. I was hoping they would match the Amazon deal, so
I could just deal with Sprint. They said they could not give me the
additional rebate Amazon was offering. They told me to buy the phones
from Amazon and then activate them as normally. Then they would cancel
my original phones and reaasign the old phone numbers to my new phones.
At this point I am leaning toward buying 2 of the Sanyo VM4500 phones.
When the smoke clears the phones will cost $50.00 each after rebates.
Hard to pass up. Phones are $380.00 less Sprint $150.00 rebate(2 year
commitment) less $180.00 Amazon rebate. $36.00 activation required
through Sprint and new service plans required. That is all fine with me.

Cool beans, Bernie ---especially if they move the numbers as they say they
will. Can't help but thinking starting the account from scratch might not be
better in regards to provisioning the handsets --- but a competent "rep" can
probably pull it off for you. I'm not picking on SPCS, necessarily --- but
it seems that radical changes to accounts breed problems.

I think that phone you're looking at is the Caddy of the PCS lineup (non
pda), and one that I'm kinda eyeing. Unfortunately it'll be March 24th
before I can move on anything ---- but it's fun to see what's out there ---
at great process to boot.

As John asked maybe you can post a short postmortem on the process to let us
know if the provisioning worked out smoothly.

Two things.

1. Credit class. The number of phones Sprint will allow on one account
is dependent on how well your credit is rated. Some people will only
qualify for one phone, with a deposit. Others will qualify for three,
and still others, up to five. And if you're a long time user who has
paid all of your bills on time, Sprint will upgrade your credit class to
support up to 10 phone lines. What useful purpose an individual user
would have for 10 phone lines, I wouldn't know, but this credit class
does exist for some reason.

2. I believe that an account must be kept active for up to 60 days for
any special or rebate to apply. If you cancel within the 14 day limit,
then obviously they'll either want the phones back or you'll be on the
hook for the full price of the phones. And if you keep the lines active
for 60 days, then of course you're now on contract, meaning you'll be on
the hook for the ETF's on each line when you cancel.

Now, being that you're not on a contract, why bother with the two new
lines of service? In theory, all you would need to do is sign on to a
contract on your current lines and get the promo price for your new
handsets.

Because that would get him only the Sprint rebate, not the Amazon
rebate which is contingent on new lines of service.
