I'm a Verizon Wireless (VZW) customer on the America's Choice Plan.
400 peak minutes, 1000 Mobile to Mobile minutes (I believe now VZW
offers unlimited "in-network minutes), and unlimited night and weekend
minutes for $39.99. I'm in the NY/NJ market and have enjoyed calls to
Canada at no extra charge (unlimited night and weekend calls to
Canada). I'm half thinking of switching to another carrier just to get
more minutes for the same price (specifically thinking of ATTWS). I'm
wondering if anyone knows if other providers also offer calls to
Canada at no extra charge? Please also indicate what market you are
    in! Thanks.

Sprint PCS does not offer free (included) calls to Canada, as far as I
know. Calls from the Sprint network in the US to Canada are some extra
amount, such as 50 or 69 cents per minute. But you can add "PCS Canada
Long Distance" for $3.00/month and then calls to Canada are only 12
    cents/minute.

Not that it will help you, but my plan with CellularSouth includes
free calling to Canada. The downside is that you have to activate
international calling and if you ever make the mistake of dialing 011
on CellularSouth, you will regret it. CellularSouth serves
Mississippi, Coastal Alabama and extreme NW Florida.

Calls to Canada come out of your minutes if you add the North America
package to any GSM national or Digital One Rate plan. The package is $9.99
per month. Calls made from Canada are also included but your N&W minutes
don't count when calling from Canada. This package is not available on GSM
    shared plans either.

If you have free domestic calling using a service such as Gorilla
Mobile , http://gorillamobile.com is very reasonable. Calls to
Canada are 5 cents/minute when you use the local NYC access number.
If you use the toll-free 866 number there is a 15 cent surcharge on
    calls.

Wow, that's a blanket statement. Maybe you should read my original
post again. Verizon WIRELESS DOES provide free calls to Canada on
their REGULAR America's Choice Plan. This feature, however, is not
available to all Verizon Wireless customers, and VZW does not
advertise this feature on their web site.

They also include it on the local plan here in North Texas.

It seems like VZW does keep this as a secret. I only found out
accidentally when I had to call someone in Toronto and had only my
mobile phone with me. When I didn't see a charge for the call on the
bill, I was very pleasantly surprised. I've never seen VZW advertise
free calls to Canada. I once emailed them about this hoping they'd
email me back a confirmation but instead I got a call from CSR on my
    mobile phone

The only plans which OFFICIALLY include free calling to Canada are National
Single-Rate with the Canada add-on, and North America's Choice which covers
    the US, Canada *and* Mexico.

It irritates me that the people in Verizon's Northeast market, which borders
Canada, got free calling to Canada but people in Verizon's Ohio/Michigan
market, which ALSO borders Canada, didn't. When I lived in Cleveland I lived
on Lake Erie, *literally* about 30 miles from the Canadian border and used to
make the occasional call to friends and colleagues in Ontario. Could've used
free long-distance on those calls. :P

Here in North Texas we get Canada calling on the prepay as well as postpaid
    on the local digital choice.

I first learned of the canadian calling from this portion of my
    statment from verizon:

    Active Additional Services:
3-party-conference - Call Forward Busy - Call Forwarding - Call
Forward No Answer - Call Waiting - Call
Delivery - Basic Voice Mail - CDMA Digital W/Txt Msg - CallerID -
USA/Can Toll Free - National Access
Local Mtm - ST of TN-1000

notice the mention of canadian calling at the end.

On sprint they have a canada calling plan, but unlike europe calls, I
have been able to call without signing up. I haven't seen if they are
    charging extra/minute
