I don't understand why Sprint hides the fact this is the AudioVox

Simple, it's not labeled as an Audiovox phone (Audiovox shipped it out
under a different company's name), and it goes along with the new
    'naming' policy.

    VI - Vision
    VGA - Camera
    RL - ReadyLink
    VM - VideoMail

That doesn't explain it. A Sanyo 5400 is still sold as a Sanyo (RL2500)

If a Sanyo is sold as a Sanyo, why is the AudioVox not sold as AudioVox?

Because it's not. Do you think there was a manufacturer called Touchpoint?
No, the Touchpoint phones were manufactured by Lucky GoldStar. Verizon has
marketed a couple phones under their own brand name (in particular, the
Verizon something-800, which I believe was made by Sharp).

    What's the big deal?

On one of the few times I'm in accord with Robert M. (Philippe,
whatever), could it be pure curiousity? I'm curious. Everything else
is Nokia xxxx, Samsung xxxx, Sanyo xxxx etc. Why not Audiovox?
Not a big deal. Just a curiousity item.

Not sure - it's been done before - "Sprint PCS CDM-9155SP by Audiovox."

    Kyocera made phones for Qualcomm.

Verizon has/had a flip from Audiovox that had no Audiovox badging on the
    outside.

Suzuki made the Sidekick available as the Tracker through Chevy...

    Wait... That's off topic.

Honestly, it's probably marketing. Audiovox doesn't have a very strong name.

Just like Sprint did when it first sold the Sanyo 4900, the phoine is being
sold before Sprint has accessories available for it. Good luck finding a car
charger for this secret Audiovox in the next three months.

No, Kyocera bought out Qualcomm's phone manufacturing arm.

But our point is correct. This is the opnly phone (of 17 currently sold)
that is labeled Sprint, not labeled by the true manufacturer.

Marketing, when Sanyo released the phone, Sprint wanted to go with the
new naming system, but Sanyo (along with many people in Sprint) wern't
fully awayre of how the marketing was going to go.

We're not supposed to call it the Sanyo 5400.

    We're can call it:

    The Sprint PCS ReadyLink 2500
    The ReadyLink 2500 by Sanyo
    The RL2500

    etc.

Also, I mis-read your quote, It isn't being released as an Audiovox,
but under a different manufacturer's name, a lot like if you buy a
Fischer stereo, it's made by Sanyo but doens't have their name on it.
(I forgot who's name they're putting on it).

It's the new naming system that started with the VGA1000.

Notice that it's the VI660 (we're not supposed to call it the Samsung
    VI660).

In a nutshell, it's to promote uniformitiy.

Someone decided that it would be easier to be able to find phones with
similar features if they had similar names.

Personally, I'm not 100% sure with it, but it is easier than the
seemingly random model numbers we had before.

The 2 letter codes didnt help the CSRs I dealt with when trying to add
    Vision to my RL2500.

One said: "Thats not a Vision Phone"

Another said " So you want the picturephone plan?"

Probably because Audiovox is no longer Audiovox. Its operations were
    purchased by Curitel.

Kyocera bought Qualcomm's phone business when they decided to switch to only
making chipsets; that's different. At that point, Kyocera was building their
own phones and only for a short time did they use the Qualcomm name.

I *think* it's Audiovox's choice. Did you know the "Toshiba" 2032SP=20
WindowsCE phone was an Audiovox, too? So is the VM4050, the=20
    "Toshiba" phone.
