Sprint selling Motorola Phones again.... FINALLY

Apparently Sprint PCs and Motorola have resolved their pricing issues
and Sprint will again be selling Motorola phones. The Motorola V60v
will be available shortly (per the internal Sprint web site). The
higher end (new blue tooth phone please) will be available in 4Q, for
Christmas I guess.

Just in the nick of time for me, my heavily used TimePort is getting
worn. Being in a weak service area the only Sprint phone that gets a
signal where we live are the Motorola phones. I get "average" service
on Sprint's network with Motorola but friends that visit get "no
service" or "next to no service" on the Sprint network using Samsung,
Sanyo and I think Nokia too.

Hopefully the newer Motorola phones will provide the same signal
quality as the older models did.

Curious to hear that a Moto phone would get better coverage than a Sanyo.
Especially an old Timeport.

Motorola phones on Sprint have consistently ranked at the bottom for
signal holding ability and drop more calls than other brands. I just
viewed a graph (based on brand and ESN prefix #) that shows Motorolas
are by far the worst Sprint phones. Sanyo is tops and Nokia is second.

I don't need to look at a chart to know that. I've just started
hearing about his from 'offical' sources, but we'll see how (bad) it
goes.

I guess the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer can't get CDMA
chips right?

Yep but there are a number of people who swear Motorolas are the best
Sprint phones they've used. Go figure. I know from personal experience
(Star Tac 7867) that they have problems and do not perform as well as
Sanyos.

No, they can't, since Intel (the world's largest semiconductor
manufacturer) doesn't design CDMA chips in the first place ;-)

Moto is approx. #8 in sales worldwide (based on 2002 sales figures, so
slightly out of date). Intel, Samsung, TI, Toshiba, ST Micro, NEC and
Infineon all rank higher.

True, and I've met a few of them, but they're always (well >90% of the
time) in a strong signal area, move to a weaker area, and that's where
the issues start.

Interesting, everything I've seen, points to them.

But then again, Samsung, Sanyo, LG, and Kyocera all claimed to be out
#1 seller at a sales rally a few years ago..

I get service on my Timeport while he doesn't. I think he has a Nokia
but can't recall.

I don't beleive it. I recall the guy in the Sprint Store telling me
the 2 best phone ever on Sprint where the Motorola TimePort Series and
one other (can't recall).

Where is this chart and who made it? Since Sprint hasn'r sold
Motorola for over 2 years I am having a hrd time believing it. Also,
consider the #1 rank provider (Verizon) pushes Motorola. The V60,
then the 720/730. If the phone didn't satisfy they wouldn't be
promoting them.

I think you need to discuss this in terms of #1 for phones or #1
overall. Moto is no where near #1 overall. Big in phones and other
DSPs

While it's a forgone conclusion that no Motorola phone will stand up to
a current-model Vision-capable phone, they were pretty damn good for
their day. Of course, my opinion is based on personal experiences.

Technically no one can unless they plan on licensing Qualcomm's patents.
I believe Motorola wanted to avoid this when they built the 2G set.

However, if you take a look at the FCC filings for the V710 (available
via a link from the phonescoop website, I'll post a URL on request),
you'll see that the PDFs showing the phone's internals will reveal that,
although it's a little fuzzy, Qualcomm chips are being used on the V710.
This might mean we could see some decent CDMA phones from Motorola for
once.

Doubt it. The Motorola chipset was the only good non-Qualcomm CDMA chipset
for a long time - we all know what crap Nokia's original CDMA chipset was.

Motorolas have traditionally been quite good at holding signals and maintaining
voice quality. Fit and finish has sucked for a long time, though, and I don't
see that changing, and then there are debacles like the horribly large number
of bugs in the T720 that Verizon Wireless sold...

I think Motorola is overpriced crap, but apparently not for the same reason
you think it's crap.
