They didn't put Reagan aboard Air Force One. The aircraft is only
known as Air Force One IF the current sitting president is aboard.
Otherwise it is just one of two jets used by the President and/or
other dignitaries at presidential invitation.

Actually it IS Air Force one. Reagan is given the honor
of the term president FOR LIFE.

Don't quit your day job. Scrubbing toilets and mopping floors may not
be as glamorous as being a stand-up comic, but at least you're
qualified.

You may or may not be right that the plane is designated Air Force One
when Reagan is on it, but it's worth noting that a term (or more
properly, title) given for life means very little when the person in
question is dead.

Air Force one is the call sign only when a sitting president is on board any
airplane even if it is on a commercial plane. Example. when a former
president leaves office and is flown to his choice of destination he is
flown on the air force jet (a boeing 747) the call sign for the plane is
Executive One. Another example is when President Nixon left office. When he
boarded the air force jet it was known as Air Force one and took off, he was
still the president in mid flight. When Gerald Ford was sworn in as President
while Air Force One was in route to California, The call sign was changed
immediately to Executive One and all air towers and airports in the flight
path of the air force jet was immediatley notified of the call sign change
immediatly, infact all radar towers tracking the air force jet even showed
the call sign change to Executive One.

This is not correct.
A US Military aircraft carrying a sitting president is referred to by ATC
as "<service> One" where "<service>" is the branch of the military
operating the aircraft. Ssince the Air Force operates the presidential
747s, the call sign, only when the sitting president is aboard, is "Air
Force One". When President Bush landed on the USS Abraham Lincoln, the
call sign was "Navy One". Since the Marines operate the presidential
helicopter, the call sign, again only when the sitting president is aboard,
is "Marine One". If the sitting president were to fly on non-military
aircraft, such as an airline or private aircraft, the call sign would be
"Executive One". If a retired president, but not the sitting president, is
aboard, there is no special call sign assigned. In the case of Nixon, the
call sign became, upon the swearing in of President Ford, "Air Force nnnnn"
where "nnnnn" was the last 5 digits of the Air Force assigned serial number
to the aircraft.
The use of specal call signs, including "xxx One", is *****ed out in the
FAA Air Traffic Publication 7110.10 "Flight Services".

Re: when they put reagan on air force
Reagan's flight was called SAM2800. The SAM part was for Special Air
Mission, and the 2800 was the tail number of the Airforce Plane.
