I am having a problem sending and receiving text messages from another
country...Finland specifically. Text messages sent to me do not arrive
nor do text messages that I send there. Is there a different procedure
for sending a text message to another country? The number of digits in
the Finnish phone numbers seem to be different than here.

Re: Overseas text messages
They can "e-mail" you from their phone by sending it your phone number
@teleflip.com. The US mobile market hasn't done a good job at implementing
foreign text messaging. T-Mobile is the best and it is the only one that
really can hit most the European carriers.
Sprint is behind on this. YOur best bet is to have your friend look at
their phone company's website (unless you speak Finnish) and figure out the
e-mail address for the phone and e-mail them.
I'm sure that international texting will come. Remember it has only been a
year since there has been interoperability of SMSs with domestic carriers.

Re: Overseas text messages
Stu,
Thanks so much for your reply! We'll give this a try. Sprint just tells
me that text messaging to Finland should work but offered no information
on how to do it.
Thanks again.

Re: Overseas text messages
Stu,
I tried the teleflip by first sending a test message to myself and it
wasn't received? Have you used it?

Re: Overseas text messages
Stu,
An update: The test message that I sent myself was received but the one
I tried to send to Finland was not. It came back with the following
error message:
"We're sorry we were unable to deliver your message. No more delivery
attempts will be made.
The following recipients do not appear to be valid North American phone
numbers. Please check the number and try again - if you believe that
the number is valid, please send an email to [email protected]."
Apparently they just support North American phone numbers?

Re: Overseas text messages
Yes, I have a friend in Dubai who uses it regularly to text me. Did you
port your number over from a different carrier?

Re: Overseas text messages
Teleflip doesn't support international texting. They are confined to the
NOrth American market. Have your friend send you an e-mail from his phone
to your e-mail account. Try replying to that e-mail. If the e-mail goes
through, you can add it to your phone book and use this approach.

Have you tried using software to send the text messages to your friend? You may
not have the correct settings for the Finish carrier you are sending to.
A number of carrier settings can be found in the support section at:
http://www.notepage.net/support.htm (the first 4 links) see if you can find the
name of the carrier you are sending to in Finland.
Best of luck,
Rick
