I am looking for a frugal good deal.
I have been using cell phones since c. 1994.
I have decided now based on a price that I believe
is very good for me to switch to Virgin mobile.
In NYC they use the Sprint [SPCS] network.
Wife and I each have our own phone.
I am unconcerned about number portability as no one has
our cell numbers except for maybe three people.
Our home answering macines call our cell phone with messages.
Does anyone have any bad experiences to relate re
Virgin Mobile in NYC?
MSN address is no good

which naturally, I will kill when it gets too much spam.
Thanks

Looks like another repackaging of Locus Mobile's prepaid based on AT&T
Wireless service.

Are you going to get the pay-as-you-go or the monthly Virgin plan? We just
got a pay-as-you-go plan for a 2nd cellphone last week. You can port a
phone number into their plan but you cannot port-out, at least not according
to the contract (which comes inside the sealed package). If you stop adding
money to your account or leave it inactive for too long, the number defaults
back to the company and they can assign it to someone else. This seems to
happen fairly quickly because my husband reports that he's gotten at least 5
wrong numbers in 6 days. And apparently the guy who had the phone nubmer
before was a drug dealer and the callers are not real understanding when
they're told they have the wrong number.

You can bring your own phone as they use the AT&T TDMA network. So if you
can find a flip TDMA phone that was previously used on AT&T your good to go.

Chuckle -- I'd be really tempted to start answering the phone with
something like "Sergeant XXXX, Drug Enforcement Agency. How can I help
you today?" GD&RFC

Yes, with different rates. Locus and CallPlus charge more for lower
value airtime cards; CallPlus, for example, $20 = 27 cpm, $30 = 19
cpm, $50 = 15 cpm.
O2 Wireless provides airtime at 15 cpm for all denominations; $20 to
$100. However, the minimum with O2 wireless seems to be $20 for 90
days or $6.67 per month. Buying airtime from Pharos International
(www.pharosint.com) for CallPlus, one can still get a $10 airtime card
(34 minutes = 29 cpm), so the minimum would be $3.34 per month.
All the Locus prepaids (Locus, CallPlus, O2 Wireless) now charge 4
minutes for each minute of a call while roaming.

There's a couple of new ones on the Locus website. Viva Wireless which looks
to be using the Verizon Wireless network has .18 anytime and .09 nights and
weekends. Theres a mention of a daily access fee but nothing on how much it
is. The card denominatons range from $10 to $100. The other is Locus
Platinum which the link goes nowhere so I can't find out any details on that
one.

Sorry, Virgin Mobile does *not* use the AT&T TDMA network. They use
the Sprint PCS CDMA network and you must buy a phone from Virgin
Mobile or use one that was formerly activated on their system.

dougf... by Email mentions

e as long as you don't make a lot of calls and don't talk a lot.
That might be the deal that Virgin made with SPCS, to NOT syphon away
the SPCS class of customers.
Thanks for you input

Hahaha!
Though, if it were me, I wouldn't answer "Drug Enforcement Agency"...
if the guy's an undercover cop or something, you could probably get in
trouble
But it'd be fun to hear the reaction and just how quickly the guy cut
off the phone!

Sprint in NYC leaves a lot to be desired. I use to have Sprint and there
service was getting progressively worse. It didn't work near my house or
near my job. Outside of NYC, it worked really well. I'm now with verizon
and they have better coverage in NYC.

I switched from Verizon* to SPCS in 1998.
For 1 month I carried both carriers' phones.
In some places Verizon was better, in others SPCS
was better. I tested including in basements.
It averaged the same to me in 1998, amd so I have
been using SPCS with two phones and batteries.
I found CS at SPCS better to deal with the Verizon.
In some cases Verizon made up answers [lied].
* there have been several name changes over the
passing years.
