Does anybody know if and when Sprint or should I say USUnwired which I heard
is the Sprint franchise in this area.
Will put up some more towers.
They were putting them up like crazy a few years ago and just seemed to stop
expanding.

I heard USUnwired has some big financial problems .
Is this true?

I am writing this because Cingular has announced plans to put up 100 towers
in Northeastern NY
Verizon also has put two new towers in the Adirondacks.

I like to stay with Sprint but with this recent news it is going to
difficult

I was in upstate NY, having driven up from Central NJ, into Northeast
PA, up to Albany and then cutting across to Rochester. Didn't lose one
bit of signal the whole time, even in Rochester and through the RIT campus.

Are you seeing dead spots? If so, where?

According to their latest quarterly report, USUnwired earned EBITDA of
$23.9 million, on an income of $147.9 million, just for the previous
quarter. It doesn't look like they're having financial problems, or if
they are, they learned a lot from Enron on how to keep it under wraps.

Planning to throw 100 towers into an area doesn't necessarily mean
Cingular is going to follow through with that plan. New cell sites
takes months or years to get up and running with regulatory and zoning
approvals, construction and tweaking. And even so, it doesn't mean that
those 100 towers are going to be in optimal spots to provide seamless
coverage.

Wait until the towers are up and you know the coverage is sound before
you consider jumping ship.

That's a major highway and you would expect coverage the whole route

Like I said Cingular and Verizon have continued to improve coverage where
Sprint , USunwired ,IWO or whoever is responsible for improving coverage in
this area has stopped putting up towers over the past several years.

Do you have the actual number of towers per carrier? Just because
Cingular has 100 towers doesn't ean Sprint *doesn't* have 100 towers "or
10 or whatever."

That is your opinion. Seeing as you've made up your mind, go ahead and
jump. I was advising you to wait until the buildout plans are complete
to avoid seeing you back here again complaining about whatever carrier
you went with.

Wait a minute, I was ON that road just week and a half ago, and coverage
was fine. Even stopped at a rest stop and used wireless web.

About three years ago there was NO SprintPCS coverage in the Southern
Tier and central New York...however Spring has done a decent job of
adding coverage.

I'm at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY and there coverage with
SprintPCS is pretty good, not as good as Verizon, but better than
Cingular.

SprintPCS also has decent coverage along route 17 from Binghamton down
to New York City. There are a few dead spots, but considering how hilly
and winding route 17 is, that is not surprising.
