Most punters still find mobile internet usage to be a frustrating
    experience they'd rather avoid.

Despite investment by operators in services such as i-mode and
Vodafone Live, 73 per cent of respondents to a new survey said don't
access the net from their mobile. Slow-loading pages (38 per cent)
and navigation difficulties (27 per cent) were among the reasons
cited why people would rather hook up to the net using a PC rather
than a phone. A quarter (25 per cent of sites were unavailable to
    those with mobile phones.

Old news...I believe I posted something like that from a trade magazine
some time ago. I recall that some guy was pitching it with the same
starry eyed look of the internet bubble days.

Why should you call it old news when the problems still exist?
Cell phone web access is still incredibly slow.
5 minutes just to go through four web pages and lookup one phone number isn't
    unusual.

    Indeed. Causes of this problem:
    1. High latency of even 3G data. Finally being addressed in 3.5G.
    2. Slow phone processors. Unfortunately, more speed burns more power.
    3. Slow WAP gateways. Shame on cellular carriers.
    4. Slow WAP servers. Providers need to get serious.

The Verizon EVDO offering, even on the smaller screens [such as my VX8300]
does a pretty damn good job!

Upgrade to EVDO and you will change your mind. I recall it being pretty fast
on Sprint and it is quite fast on Verizon as well. Just surfing the sites I
am used to like CNN is now very fast.

Your eyes must be way better than mine.
I find the small picture to be a bad joke.

Current EV-DO is certainly better than CDMA 1xRTT, but is still pretty
sluggish on TCP/IP connections. HSDPA is a good deal snappier. EV-DO
Rev A is claimed to be improved over current EV-DO, but is still
    vaporware.

Ah yes ... but I have EVDO available to me now from two providers and HSDPA is
not available to me at all. Further, Rev A is not vaporware, it is simply not
    deployed yet.

    Right from the source:

What technology are you using? EV-DO is very fast, and HSDPA, while
slower than EV-DO, and not as widely available, is still not as slow as
    you say.

We shall how valid your claim is in a few months when Sprint rolls out
    EV-DO Rev A
