My boss wants a new phone...because one of the other bosses has a 650p
and loves it. But it has versamail and wont' push email so he has to
use 15 minute sync to get his emails and says that this shortens his
battery use.
SO does the W version have push for email?
(sorry I am talking built in and not 3rd party)
how about the battery life of the 700W it list more talk time but not
sure about overall with standby.
the new 700wx is it some sort of improvement?
overall do people still prefer the p over the w ?
thank you for reading this I am confused as to which to get. The P has
been around a long time but it seems that everything you need is 3rd
party and pay and pay.. but again without using a Windows version I
don't know ...is it the same...everything you need you have to buy
later?
thanks again for any info

Sprint provides a push e-mail service for ALL of those phones; the 650,
the 700p and the 700wx. It's called Sprint business connection.
Like all push e-mail, to get this to work you will have to run a small
application on your desktop taht connects to yoru mail server, checks
for messages, and then "pushes" them to your phone. You then install a
small app on your handheld that's used to read the messages as they get
pushed to you.
I've seen it used, and it seems to work quite well. In some ways I'd
even argue it's more flexible than the Blackberry offering, in that you
can have push e-mail without having to have an exchange server.

The wx doubles the available memory over the 700w. You will have 64Mb
of useable free memory on the wx, as opposed about 30 or so on the W.
> overall do people still prefer the p over the w ?
My view of smartphones in general is rather critical and dim, but having
used Palm OS for a long time, I still would prefer it over Windows
Mobile if I had to choose. Palm OS seems to be a more practical
implementation, and was basically designed from the start as an OS
intended for mobile devices. This is different from Windows Mobile,
which started life as MS Windows shoehorned into a small space. If you
ask me, Windows Mobile tries to do too much, and performance suffers
because of it.
Don't get me wrong. I have my issues with Palm OS, too. I think
smartphones really are kind of a jack-of-all-trades and master of none.
However, if you really want a device that does a lot of things and
does them all badly, then my bet is that the 700p will do things LESS
badly than the 700wx.

Pretty much. In fact, I would say that many Windows Mobile apps are
probably more expensive than the Palm equivalents.
One last thing: no matter what, you're GOING to pay for push e-mail.
The whole point of "push" is that there is a provider with a server out
there "pushing" the e-mail to your phone. Inevitably, you'll have to
pay whoever's running that server for doing the pushing.

Re: need help with 700P or 700W....questions here
Blackberrys have BIS service the Blackberry Internet Service which
really lets you have push email with any email that supports POP or
IMAP, etc... Although its not true push as like with the BES server
connected to exchange, its more push then your desktop pulling for new
email every X minutes and then pushing it to the network. Also doesn't
require you to waste more energy and leave your PC on, worse yet leave
your laptop at work or home instead of bringing it with you as I have
seen people do.

Re: need help with 700P or 700W....questions here
How is the reception on the Treo 650P and Treo 700P as compared to a normal
non-PDA cell phone? Do the PDAs really make good phones?

Re: need help with 700P or 700W....questions here
I really want to thank all of you for your help.
We have an exchange server here and the push was what the 650 people
here were griping about. The only thing they can do is have it call in
on a schedule and get mail. I had not heard of have your desktop call
in and then send it to you.
**BIG NEW QUESTION***
Is the battery time on a W the same as a P ?
""one of the doctors here has a 6700 and all she said was she likes it
but the battery time is L O W.....
but I think that is one cool little phone.
I heard that some of them want the W phone for wifi....I said why
and they had a few good reasons, no minutes and use in coffee shops
and the like.
thanks again for all your help

The 700W has the MSFP / AKU 2.0 pack needed to support push email from
Exchange 2003 SP2.

I have the 650, it's a great e-mail device, it's OK for web browsing and
Google searches, it can also run secure shell so I've been able to log
into my Linux systems and run Emacs remotely. It also does Bluetooth well
and it hot syncs with Evolution. Those are the good things. As a stand
alone phone it's awful. It's very difficult to hear when you are using it
by itself. In the car I love it, it has good reception and the Bluetooth
speakers in the car fix the sound problem, however when I get a call when
I'm not in the car I find it nearly unusable.

Palm claims that the 700p has slightly more talk time (4.5 hours as
opposed to 3 on the 700wx), but claims that both have the same 300 hour
standby time.
I WILL say that I highly doubt anyone who really uses the phone has ever
come close to 300 hours of standby. If you have the phone doing push
e-mail (or pull e-mail for that matter), or have other apps running all
the time, that uses up the battery. Typical "real world" battery life
seems to be enough for one or two days before you need a charge.
The general recommendation is to plug it in every night to top off the
battery.
The good news is, there is an extended battery that can be bought, for
those who aren't happy with the standard battery life. It advertises
about 33% more capacity than the OEM battery:

> ""one of the doctors here has a 6700 and all she said was she likes it

The reality is that this is a disadvantage of a smartphone. Your
battery just isn't going to last forever, but at least ont he Palm
devices, should be enough for an average day's use.

Those folks need to realize that these phones use EVDO data, which does
not use airtime minutes on either Verizon or Sprint, and is about as
fast as a DSL connection. Both offer unlimited data plans for PDAs, and
if you're using push e-mail, then most likely you HAVE the unlimited
data plan as well. So, why pay extra for WiFi at a coffee shop?

You have an interesting definition of "slightly more talk time." For
instance, mine would not include a 50% increase, which is exactly what
4.5 Vs. 3 works out to be.

Key word there is "advertises."
While it may indeed have 33% more capacity, that doesn't seem to be
translating into 33% more battery life. There are several possible
explanations for this, none of which I wish to get into here.
