Sprint does this over the air, right? Is there a number to dial and do it
automatically or do you have to talk to an annoying customer service rep and
ask them to do it. I know with verizon and alltel it's *228, but that
doesn't seem to work on sprint.

PRL - Account flagged through *2. Tell Clair PRL Update and get taken
to a rep who will flag your account. Sprint has some very dumb reps,
so you may have to do this more than once.

Software/Firmware - Take phone in to Sprint Store. Make sure they did
the job before you leave with your phone, many time they take it in
back and just let it sit there until you pick it up.

Alot of reps will tell you that they do not see an option on their screen
to update the PRL. Tell them you would be willing to wait while they check
with their supervisor on the issue.

I did this once before, and the rep was shocked, and told me she had been
"on the floor" for 2 years and never had the PRL question come up.

They also like to insist that Claire lets you update your PRL by saying PRL
Update. Inform them that you said that and Claire sent you to them. Maybe
    they can fix this soon.

PRL updates can be done over the air. You do have to talk to a customer
service rep and tell them to flag your account for it, though. After
that, when you dial *2, it will update your PRL.

Software/firmware updates can only be done at a Sprint PCS Store. I just
had my A500 updated to WD29, and I've noticed definite improvements in
some things that used to irritate me...

You mouth gets quite foul when you are high. You really should quit that
    stuff.

It would be nice if Sprint did it that way, but you have to call *2 and
say to Clare "PRL Update". She will then transfer you to a rep and you
have to ask for the PRL update. Saying something like "i roam a lot and
was told that I need something that is called a "PRL update"." It
always works for me. The current version is 10019. The rep will flag
your account, and tell you to hang up, and call *2 back... at which time
you will hear an automated message saying "Sprint is updating your
phone." It takes about a minute and notifies you when the update is
    complete.

As far as a software update, that is more complicated as it cannot be
done over the air. You have to take it into a Sprint store and the tech
there will do it. This normally takes anywhere from 15 minutes to 45,
depending on how busy they are. First, you need to see how to find out
which software version you currently have and if there is a new one
available -- this newsgroup and other newsboards likd at sprintusers.com
and 3gupload.com are good places to find this out. Then, if you do in
fact have an older software version, call the Sprint store in your area
and ask to speak to their rep, and verify that they have this software
in their system and can update your phone.

The software update is a pain to get in a lot of places, many stores are
too lazy to see if they have a new version, or don't know how to look...
or just don't want to. Therefore, you have to be very specific in
asking and letting them know what phone you have and if they have a
    specific update available.

    Hope this helps.

I didn't know there was a new update for the A-500. What are the
    improvements?

Among other things, it fixes a problem with names not showing up
properly in alphabetical order in lists. It also fixes a problem where
it sometimes for no apparent reason becomes necessary to turn the phone
off and then back on again to reboot in order to make a call. It also
adds some new ringers. Someone posted a list of all the changes and
improvements made, but those are the ones I'm able to remember offhand.

Re: How to update PRL and Phone Software?

Thanks for the info! I will stop by a SPCS store one of these days and
get the software updated. I am also annoyed by the fact that I have to
re-start the phone in order to make a call, from time to time. It hasn't
    happened very often lately, though...
